Unhappy Some advice on shedding to a brand new cat owner please

I've recently got two cats. Elvis who is male (obviously) and neutered and Violet who is 15 weeks, female and as yet unneutered although she will be getting spayed at the beginning of March.

Violet hardly sheds at all with her still having kitten fur, although I'm getting her used to being brushed.

Elvis on the other hand sheds loads and my house is getting full of cat hair fast.

I've bought a furminator which I manage to give him a short brush with daily and it's made a little bit of difference considering he won't let me brush him for long. However he's still shedding a lot.

Are there any vitamins I can give him to help? Is there anything else at all I can do other than dust and hoover a lot?

Thanks in advance.

If you've only recently got them you will probably tend to find the shedding will be sporadic, there may be a couple of weeks when he's losing loads and then for a few weeks he will hardly lose any. Although this will depend on his breed and coat.

Regular brushing and a healthy diet is the best thing you can do to minimise it. Supplementing their food with salmon oil may also help a little.

We have a Furminator which I can only use on one cat, the other one bites it but they both like the Zoom Groom and although it doesn't remove as much of the undercoat as the Furminator, it does get a lot of the loose stuff out.

Maisie had clearly not been groomed for a good while, if ever, when she came to us,and she was shedding everywhere, the Zoom Groom sorted it out. She asks for it even when she doesn't need brushing.

I have to give mine some treats to keep his mind off it, and sneak up behind him for a quick groom

He loves it on his head though

Congratulations on your two new family members. You are in for a real treat!

It's possible Elvis was not being fed a very good diet. Get him on a good quality canned food, use the zoom groom as much as he'll allow, make sure he gets plenty of exercise, and the quality of his coat will improve over time.

If you can't use a furminator, zoom-groom, or brush then hand-stroking can really help shedding too. A grooming-mit is also useful because you can mimic normal hand-stroking sensations but remove more hair x

Re: Some advice on shedding to a brand new cat owner please

That reminded me - I got a grooming mitt to try early on when we got our boy and I was still working out what was needed. I put it on and started to use it, he liked it at first but then looked round and saw it and started attacking it, he was really getting stuck in, eyes were wild. I had to give up before I lost an arm.
