Sorry I'm new- posted in the wrong place!

Hi,

I'm new on this forum. I adopted 2 cats at the weekend (a mum & son) and I would just like some advice on some health issues.

The mum has had diarrhea with a lot of blood (she had this before I got her)- I took her to the vets and they have prescribed some antibiotics & told me to keep her on a diet of chicken & rice. The problem is she is already very underweight & she won't touch the bland diet. I have tried cooking the chicken in stock to give it more flavour but she has no interest. I am worried about her not eating because she is so skinny. Also her son (who is fairly skinny too) is a greedy little thing & so polishes off any food before she gets a chance.

How do I get her to eat chicken & rice.. or is there any wet cat food that is as gentle on stomaches as chicken & rice?

Any advice much appreciated

Hi Gemma and welcome to PF and well done for taking on these two!

Has she eaten at all since you got her? What did the vet suggest was the problem? Which antibiotics is she on? I'm assuming they're not from a rescue.
Sorry a lot of questions but it will give us a clearer idea of things.

I hope she's drinking though.

Re: Sorry I'm new- posted in the wrong place!

Thank you for the reply. They were from a rescue but they'd only been there a week so aren't in great condition. The vet didn't really know what the problem was and the cat had been dewormed & flead so the antibiotics are just precautionary (sorry I'm not sure the name without checking the bottle which is at home).

She's eaten & drank really well since I got her but she was fed on go cat dry at the rescue so I just put her straight on James Wellbeloved because I didn't want to change her diet too much but didn't want to give go cat especially as it was irritating her bowel anyway. She has also eaten felix pouches but won't touch the chicken/rice that I am cooking her. After doing some reading on here I am going to do an order on Zooplus for some better foods but in the mean time I'm not sure what to do.

Glad to hear she's been eating.

An alternative bland diet would be white fish - you might have more luck with this. Also try the chicken ( warm ) without the rice. The only others I can suggest are the veterinary prescription 'sensitive' ones. Good idea to put them on a good wet once this is sorted out.

Re: Sorry I'm new- posted in the wrong place!

Thanks, I had a few replies on my post in the cat chat section and have just bought some good wet food as well as Hills prescription wet. Have a fish to cook for her tonight so hopefully she will like that.

Thanks for the help
