Third eyelid showing, occasionally grinds teeth.

Hello,

I"m new to this forum and this is my first post, I have read a lot on this forum and i've found it very interesting and informative.

In the middle of last year I had my lovely 18 year old Chocolate Tabby Point siamese boy, Kato, put to sleep after a long battle with kidney failure.

A recently decided it was time to find a new companion, as my home seems so empty and cold without a little feline buddy to share it with.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a lovely chocolate and white oriental bi-colour boy, Jacob. He was 8 months old as the breeder wanted to keep him until he was neutered as he had a retained testicle and she wanted to make sure it was safely removed before she rehomed him.

He's a lovely healthy lad, so full of energy and enthusiasm for life and even though i've only had him a short time we have made a wonderful bond.

One thing that has been worrying me a little is that his third eyelid is often showing, even when he seems fully awake, most of the time is is not much, you can see it in the pictures i have posted (if i've added them right and they show up!)

On a possibly unrelated note, he occasionally grinds his teeth.

I have him booked into the vets tomorrow to have him checked over, but I was just wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues, so perhaps i can know what to expect.

Neither issue seems to be bothering him at all, he's eating well and is very happy.

Sorry for the long post, thanks for reading.

Julie

Just to update this, I took Jacob to the vets, and he was given a thorough check over and pronounced 100% healthy, which was such a relief.

He still grinds his teeth occasionally but seems to show his third eyelid much less frequently now, and only mostly when he's just woken up.

The vet could not find any cause for the tooth grinding.

Hey Idon'tlikecoffee (well, I love that stuff), I am surprised that no one has commented on your thread. So, welcome to the forum.

Your boy is truly stunning and his eyes actually look "normal" to me. I am glad though that you took him to the vet and that your mind is now at rest.

Re: Third eyelid showing, occasionally grinds teeth.

HI Julie and welcome to the forum. I'm so sorry for your loss of your beloved Kato last year.

What a gorgeous sweet boy Jacob looks to be. Often the third eye lid showing can indicate a tummy or intestinal upset, such as might come with a diet change. So if he's eating something different from what he ate before coming to you, that might be all it is, and will resolve as he adjusts to the food. Even if you are feeding the same food, it could be a change in water, or stress that might cause some tummy upset.

I'm glad you brought him to the vet, peace of mind is so important. Cats pick up on our stress, so if you worried about him, he would feel that worry. This way you know he is well, and he will be more relaxed because you are.

My Little Cat used to grind her teeth a lot when eating. It started when she was about five months old, when her adult teeth came in. I notice she does it much less now than she used to do. She's 19 1/2 months old now.

Congratulations to both of you, and may you have many many happy years together.

Re: Third eyelid showing, occasionally grinds teeth.

Thank you for all the kind comments, the vet said the grinding might just be a habit he picked up, and he might just grow out of it, or continue doing it.

I was so worried that he might be uncomfortable or in some sort of pain, but he assured me that was not the case.

He's so boisterous and outgoing, when i got him from his breeder she had lot of other kittens and i was quite worried when i took him home he would be sad and lonely and nervous.

I really only want one cat, but had decided if Jacob seemed depressed or lonely I would look into getting another.

I was so relieved when i got him home, he just bounded out of his carrier and started playing, he seems totally fearless and has shown no signs of missing his other friends.

He really likes retrieving his little mice and we can play the throwing/retrieving game for hours, which is fine in the day time, but sometimes in the middle of the night when I'm in bed he'll plonk his mousey on my face and leap on it, and we have to then spend a good amount of time playing the throwing game.

At bed time he loves coming under the covers and snuggling up for cuddles.
Misi, lorilu and Cats cats cats like this.
