Re: Diarrhoe (sp)

I would introduce a quality dry food, not a supermarket brand, and leave it dow,he wont let himself starve,i think youve spoiled him!!you could also give him some hi life wet food as a treat.

Does anyone have any advice please on what to do?

He won't eat cat food or cat biscuits and so his diet consists of tuna, sardines, ham and fresh fish. He occassionally has scrambled egg too. He used to drink lots of milk too but we stopped that and he hasn't had any for over 2 months now
The tuna is fine but fish should only be given once or twice a week (fish does not contain enough of the nutrients that a cat needs taurine etc.)

Ham should only be given as a treat as it has a high salt content that is not good for cats.

Scrambled egg is ok too but only occasionally.

When you say that you have tried him on cat food what specifically have you tried?

I'd start by introducing a high-meat content food, such as Applaws, Sainsbury's Encore, Tesco Finest (I forget which one but it has 40-50% meat), Hi-Life, Natures Menu, Natures Harvest, Feline Fayre (Asda in a Black Tin or Pouch), Porta 21 from Zooplus.co.uk.

Applaws, Encore and Feline Fayre are not complete but if your cat goes for these (most do) you can gradually add some of the others in the list to transition onto the complete foods.

If your cat likes fish you could sprinkle some fish and fish juice over the food to encourage it as cats are driven by smell then tastse. Also freeze dried treats crushed over the food sometimes works.

The vet WILL prescribe a food for sensitive stomachs (99 times out of 100 they do) This may help as most of them have artifical flavours and sweetners to ensure that they are eaten. The problem is that sometimes it difficult to wean your pet off them especially if they are fussy eaters.

Cats are a problem as you should not starve a cat for more that 24 hours as they need to ingest nutrients constantly.

I disagree with this Karen given what Tinks has posted, her kitten is 6 mths old and had the trotts since yesterday morning and isn't eating anything ,so until she can get him to the vet (as to me this suggests he is unwell and no amount of specialist foods will help, depending on why he's not well)i think since he's not eating, which is naturally a worry however it's making sure he's not dehydrated and once he's on the mend he will start to eat in which case he can either eat what he's been eating for the last 6 mths and been fine with i assume or she now has other suggestions which to try

I didn't say don't take him to the vets. Tinks did state that he will not eat cat food. My reply was based on getting him eating a proper diet once the vets have given antibiotics and some prescription diet (normal approach).
