Re: Cat has struvite crystals

The vet said feeding any other foods whilst my cat is on the royal canin urinary s/o diet diminishes it's effect.

What are your views?

It's getting hard to get him to eat the urinary s/o wet and although I have the dry version also that will entail putting it down and then my other two cats will hoover it up.

I thought maybe if I gave him at least a complimentary food for one meal - which is just chicken, tuna and rice that would not do any harm?

regards
Rob

Re: Cat has struvite crystals

Thanks, thought I'd ask for a second opinion here.. I told the vet I was not happy feeding a grain content filler like royal canin but she just said it was as good as anything else out there. I suppose it is as good as any supermarket food but I usually buy more premium food on-line.

regards
Rob

It might be crap but for some reason it works, at least it has here he does get a Cystaid pill everyday to, but I would love to knock the RC on the head but darent risk another blockage he has had 3 at least, already & the last one was my fault for swoping his food
Ianthi likes this.

Re: Cat has struvite crystals

Hi everyone

I'm the owner of two male cats who have gone through this.

My at the time (vaguely) 3 yr old CC had a near blockage in 2005 so the vet put him on Royal Canin for struvite stones LP34. He has been on it ever since and is fighting fit with no recurrences thanks God. However, he did not like the RC wet and starved for 2 days before I gave in and bought him RC dry. That he did like and I have been adding water to the dry RC. After few months I added Felix AGAIG half a pouch in a meal, and have been feeding him this combo since. Knock in the wood, he is well. The vet was not pleased to hear about Felix, and gave me a peace of his mind, but as I am not rich, this is the best I can do.

As I have 5 cats, when CC was diagnosed I had to start feeding him separately, so he was eating alone and others together. I do have to supervise meals as grass is always greener on the other side and they all wanna eat each other's meals Cesar Millan's trademark CSHHHHH sound came in handy and now they know that it means NO eating other food. It only works while I'm around though

Then last year my (vaguely 9yr old) Lil One got blocked and had to have emergency catheterisation as he nearly died . £650 later and a week in hospital, he was fine, thanks to God and those who helped. He had the same type of stones, and I thought it was weird, considering they are not related.

The vet suggested it could be related to London's hard water, as well as a supermarket diet and too much dry food. So I bought 3 water fountains, an extra litter tray, water filter, and put Lil One on RC wet. He put up with it for about 3 months then I slowly put him on RC dry with water and he loved it. Now he is also on Felix AGAIG + RC dry daily like CC. Although I still give them RC wet once or twice a week instead of Felix. I also bought some Cosma wet, which is good quality food and they love it.

I have a third (unrelated) boy and knock in the wood he has been fine. The difference it seems is that he likes wet food and drinking water, while CC and Lil One like dry and I rarely see them drink water.

If you can afford better food then Felix AGAIG I would strongly recommend you do buy it.

I strongly believe that Royal Canin is a must with this condition, as well as getting cat to drink more, and giving him an extra tray, so he holds wee in less.

BTW my cats are indoor cats (with occasional supervised outdoor access). Neither of them are on any meds. Never tried them on Hills urinary, but a friend did, and her boy kept getting recurring blockages, only month after the other. So she has now just put him on RC and we'll see how it goes. I have also read so many cases praising RC.

Lastly, vet's comment got me thinking, our hard water may be good for human consumption but maybe much for animals. They are now strictly on bottled or filtered water, with Drinkwell fountains around. I believe that RC is also making them more thirsty on purpose so they drink more water, which all corrects PH.

I normally buy RC from Vet UK Selling Pet Meds, Vet Products and Pet Products to Pet Owners. which also has a free delivery when over ~£19 and they give an hour slot when they deliver. So far it's the cheapest (and very reliable) supplier I found.

All the best
Gee

Re: Cat has struvite crystals

Your vet is right, so we have been wasting our money on the S/O food for years

Re: Cat has struvite crystals

I know this is an old discussion now, but my cat has recurring struvite stones so I looked into this and have found the S/O is not supposed to be a long term food. Somone said her cat eventually got diabetes due to the S/O food. Anyway, I'm in the US and so frustrated because they don't sell cystaid here! My cat is starting to show signs of getting another one so I guess i"m going to put him on the S/O for a bit again. SIGH. It's very expensive having all my cats on only wet food!
