Cat with bladder problem
Hi, I am desperate for advice, my 3 year old cat has a bladder problem, she started peeing in the house around oct last year, I took her to the vet, who put her on a course of anti-biotics, this was a 2 week course. I noticed she was peeing in the house again a couple of weeks ago, and there was blood in it. I took her to the vets, who put her on another course of anti-biotics, he thought he could feel a lump in her bladder, but after two weeks it had reduced. The vet discharged her last week after completing the 2 week course, but I found yesterday she has pee'd again. This time on electrical equipment!! Im at my wits end, I really don't know what to do and I'm losing faith with the vet.

Re: Cat with bladder problem
Did he do any urine tests?
Only 5% of cystitis cases in young cats is due to a bacterial infection (older cats it is more likely to be bacterial), so unless she is in that 5% antibiotics won't help. Sometimes there is an obvious cause other than infection, such as crystals, but more often than not it's idiopathic meaning they don't know what caused it. Environment is very important for cats with cystitis. Stress causes should be reduced as much as possible, so get a feliway, ensure there are enough trays, evaluate all areas of the cats life and limit stress as much as you can. Ensure she is drinking enough, so change to all wet food, get a water fountain and dot water bowls over the house. Dilute urine is less irritant to a sore bladder than concentrated urine. Ensure she is on adequate pain relief when she gets cystitis, as it's bloody sore, and pain can then be later associated with the tray leaving you with a behavioural problem when the initial cause has gone. Get some Cystophan or Cystease. My preferred choice is Cystophan as as well as GAGs which help the bladder lining, it also contains L-tryptophan which is the precursor to serotonin which will help if it is stress related |

Re: Cat with bladder problem
I've had the same thing - my two yr old cat started weeing in weird places last October. Vet said she had a hardened bladder wall and she had blood in her urine. Was given antibiotics and some other capsules (can't for the life of me remember what they were called) which she has had 2 x daily up until a week ago. She hasn't had any accidents since she started the treatment and her urine is now clear of blood.
Apparently it could have been caused by stress, we had been away for ten days leaving my son to look after her and our other cat, she had never been left before. I would go back to your vet or see another one. |
