My old cat I think is constipated

As the title, My old cat of 17 has been acting a little strange these last 2 evenings by going into her dirt box about 10 times in a short period but doing nothing and just sitting in postion but doing nothing.

I get the feeling she is constipated and she was cryinbg in the night to go out and that is something she never does.

She has been having RC biscuits for the last 2weeks along with her wet food and thought maybe it could be that.
I know she is getting old and is quite wobbly on her back legs and drinks water quite a bit.....but on the whole has been very well.

I know alot of people are very experienced here in the cat section and maybe able to help me with the issue.
Thanks in advance

Re: My old cat I think is constipated

The only thing to do is take her to the vet! Hopefully it is something which could be treated quite easily if treated promptly xx

Re: My old cat I think is constipated

Is she still weeing ok? Sometimes cystitis looks like constipation or the other way round.

Why have you introduced the biscuits again?

Re: My old cat I think is constipated

May be kidney problems if she is drinking a lot? My cat got that at 15 and lived to 19, so she may do very well with treatment, hope it all goes well tomorrow

Re: My old cat I think is constipated

Ah ok, the way I read it first was that she didn't get biscuits until about two weeks ago but I doubt very much that just changing the brand would constipate her. Would you say that she is drinking and weeing more? When is the last time she pooped?

Did you say you were popping her to the vet first thing tomorrow? Given her age I would have full blood test and a good check of her kidneys, thyroid and liver.

If she gets the all clear and she is constipated than a little mashed pumpkin or butternut squash can help greatly but only do this when you know that is what it is.

Hope all goes well tomorrow!

Re: My old cat I think is constipated

I agree with others that she seems due a vet visit.....but if you have some tinned fish in oil at home I would try feeding her some of that tonight and maybe tomorrow too. That may help shift constipation and at least make her feel more comfortable meantime.
