Jelly vs Pate

What makes the pate type foods preferable to the ones in jelly, in the Bozita range, for example. Is it just because if there is jelly then there is less meat? Or is it something about the manufacturing process/contents? I've seen lots of you mention this but I haven''t been able to work out why. I have one particular little miss who loves to lick the jelly off!

Also, thank for all the advice everyone has given others that I've been able to read. When we first got the cats my OH said "any cats of mine won't be eating the posh stuff" meaning Whiskas, and now tolerates my insistence of grain-free foods.

Re: Jelly vs Pate

I have been thinking about this, I bought the Bozita chunks in jelly which cookie is gradually eating more of, but as mentioned seems the pate variety is the type of choice for many.

Am I right in thinking the pate type is just the same texture as pâté we humans eat ? Does it come in a block and how do you serve it to your cat. Do you cut it into small pieces ?

I have now ordered some different types of food for her to see which she prefers.

Re: Jelly vs Pate

Yep the jelly ones are up to 50% jelly so you don't get as much meat, so also not such good value - not sure about the ingredients in the jelly either Hobbs will help. The pate ones are not so thick as our human pate they have more moisture and you spoon it out into the bowl just like normal food. I don't bother cutting it up - the Bozita stuff falls apart anyway - as I say lots more moisture than human pate. If your cat loves jelly then by all means feed the jelly ones.

Re: Jelly vs Pate

I prefer pates to jelly because I feel like I'm getting more of the 'good stuff' for my money I sometimes add a bit of warm water to make sure they're getting enough moisture - but I think the pates are pretty moist anyway!

Re: Jelly vs Pate

I would prefer to feed pate foods because you get more for your money! As I understand it the reasonable brands like Bozita do still have high meat content in the chunks - but as has been said, there are relatively few chunks in a lot of jelly. With pate you get more of the good stuff.

Unfortunately the cats don't agree!

They have really gone off pate foods - some they will pick at but leave at least half (even if I "forget" the usual small amount of dry on that day) and some they won't touch at all - I just end up throwing out entire tins of food and still having 2 hungry cats.
The tetra pack pate foods they have never liked.

So for now its a compromise - mostly they get bozita in jelly, alongside tins of fish smilla (they won't touch the poultry ones) and just keep trying others, albeit with little success.

Re: Jelly vs Pate

I think bozita pates are better because they do not contain preservatives while jelly type bozita do...

I prefer to feed the pate foods too and also mix in some warm water. I've never tried Seb with any jelly or gravy foods, Frankie has had them in the past, but I think the likes of Bozita, AC, Smilla and Grau are quite moist, they smell nice too, I've even been tempted to have a little taste of the tuna Smilla, reminds me of grated dark chocolate

Re: Jelly vs Pate

Thank you everyone for all your helpful replies. My cats do seem to be more fond of the jelly Bozita over the pate Bozita, and I'm comparing the Reindeer flavour in both types. They aren't particularly fussy and tend to eat anything I put in front of them. Maybe I just think they don't like the pate ones as much because I've put a similar volume out and they just need to eat less of it? As two are kittens they eat as much as they want still.

Re: Jelly vs Pate

Yep that helped me as well. I have some pâté ones on order and have ordered a couple of different brands from Floyds as Cookie just isn't interested in the Macs.
