My lovely cat just died suddenly and I don't know why..

My beautiful Ty, a male black and white cat aged 11, just died suddenly. He came in through the cat flap, lay completely splayed out on his front, no movement at all in his legs and had great difficulty breathing. He was literally gasping for breath and he kept crying out so loudly. The crying noise he made was absolutely heart breaking. We also think he was paralysed and he didn't or couldn't move his legs or tail. He only lasted about 3 minutes before he died.

We thought he may have been run over and called the vet. By the time I got through he had died. There's not a mark on him so we think maybe he wasn't run over. Does anyone have any ideas on what could have caused this?

He was otherwise completely healthy and running and jumping all over the place earlier today.

I'd be grateful if anyone could help me.

Re: My lovely cat just died suddenly and I don't know why..

With the time of year there could be anti freeze about, a neighbour described a similar death when one of her cats were deliberately poisoned with anti freeze, the only way to know for sure would be to have a vet perform tests . Im so sorry hes died though, and that you had to witness that but at least he passed at home where he felt safe. Run free at the bridge Ty xx

Has this literally just happened, or have you taken him to a vet, and are awaiting test results?

Sorry for your loss

Re: My lovely cat just died suddenly and I don't know why..

Poisoning does sound like a cause for the death of your cat How awful for you to have him die like that
It would be a good idea to get your vet to do an autopsy and find out the cause. I know that it would haunt me for a long time if I didn't know how he had died.
RIP Ty
we love bsh's likes this.

So sorry for your loss

I'd want a post mortem done too to establish the cause

Re: My lovely cat just died suddenly and I don't know why..

A post mortem is going to be the only way to tell for sure, but it will be expensive and not covered by insurance. This actually sounds exactly how I lost a four month old kitten about 20 years ago. He came in one morning behaving exactly as you describe, he died in the car on the way to the vet.

The vet said that he had probably fallen out of a tree or jumped down in the wrong place and ruptured his stomach by landing on the fence. It was in the summer so not anti-freeze season.

I am very sorry for your loss.
