Cat broke his leg!!

Hi
My daughter has got 3 cats aged between 3 and 4 years. For the last 6 weeks she and husband and their dog have been living with us as they bought an old house that needed completely gutting. The cats were locked in the house (the one they are doing up) and every evening and weekend when they were working on the house the cats were allowed to come and go. The house is only a couple of weeks away from being habitable. Disaster struck yesterday!! At 4pm my son in law went to the house and the cats went out.
One cat Ginny had a scrap with a neighbouring cat on a fence, fell off and broke his thigh bone! They took him straight to the vets and this morning it has been pinned with a case around it. He will have it in the case for 6 weeks. He is due home in the next couple of days. Problem is, what to do with him whilst he is getting better? My daughter and hubby work full time. Will he be ok shut in one room in their house with us checking him at lunch time? I could have him here in a room but he would hate it with our strange dogs and cats and my daughters other cats wouldnt accept him back. Hopefully in 2 weeks they will all be back home.

Re: Cat broke his leg!!

I would have him in a large dog crate with litter tray etc so he cant move around so much or he could end up worse hope he has a speedy recovery

Re: Cat broke his leg!!

Rose-A cat with a cast and a recently pinned leg will require much more supervision than this I'm afraid so he needs to come and live with you for the duration. For one thing you'll need to check the cast very regularly for swelling, soreness odour temperature of limb above and below etc and be prepared to act immediately if anything untoward is noticed. Otherwise some irreparable damage can be caused. He'll also need frequent check-ups by the vet.

Agree with DB about the dog crate as he'll need to be immobilised as much as possible to aid the healing process. I would place this in a room away main traffic though ideally it should be in a place where he can easily be observed.

Here's an example of the required size. Petplanet deliver next day if order is placed before 2pm.

Re: Cat broke his leg!!

We will speak to the vet tomorrow. We want to do whats best for him but are worried about stressing him out. It isnt a plaster cast on his leg its a sort of cage. Thanks for your help! (we have a puppy pen)

Re: Cat broke his leg!!

My parents cat broke his leg falling off the computer desk (silly cat) he had many weeks in a dog crate but was so patient bless him. He recovered fully and is quite old now and still has no problems.
Sending healing vibes for your puss

Yes cage. Yes know what you mean now. Obviously see what vet says but I feel he'll need the same level of supervision. Cat's are experts at hiding pain for one thing. He may become very stressed as well with the confinement, especially if younger.
