Weird eye reflection

Earlier today I noticed that Wilson was keeping his left eye more shut than the other, as if it was hurting him to keep it open. I had a closer look and his inner eyelid was showing slightly more than usual. He goes outside in our enclosed garden, so I figured he'd just scratched his eye on a twig or something.

However, now that it's dark I noticed that his left eye is reflecting light differently than normal. I've never had a cat with an infected/hurt eye before, so I was hoping any of you would know if cat's eyes reflect light differently when they're infected?

I'll be calling the vet on Monday morning but just wanted to see if any of you had experienced something similar.

Re: Weird eye reflection

Is it more dull?

may have just scratched it sweetie - just keep an eye and call vets as you said x

if it looks inflamed or even gunky later try a weak tea rinse - natural astringent so should soothe it a bit xx

Re: Weird eye reflection

Thanks Lou, yes it's dull and I've just now noticed that the white in his eye has gone bright red. No gunkyness yet though. Also, his ears and paws are very hot

I spoke with the emergency vet who said that the eye infection can wait until Monday so I can see my regular vet, but to keep an eye on the fever and bring him in if he starts sweating through his paws or gets any laboured breathing.

Looks like a long night ahead!

You got a digital thermometer hun?? xx

You'll be able to tell if a fever spikes but always good if you have the means to check it for definite xx

can other cats get at his run out of interest?? x

can't see him getting fevers and the likes just from his eye xx

if he's blinking alot try the weak tea, it will soothe it a bit hunny xx

Re: Weird eye reflection

Thanks both

He's had a sleep and some food and seems to be feeling better now, even had a little play with his toy, but his eye is still not looking right. Will try the tea thing tomorrow if it's looking gunky. At least he's not so warm anymore, which is good.

Lou, I've got a digital thermometer but I dread to try to use it on him...I can't imagine he would be pleased

He won't have been in contact with any other cats as the garden is completely enclosed.

I would imagine he won't come out with a fever then hunny x

hasn't had his vacc's lately though has he?? x

more likely he's scratched it on something as you thought, they'll use a few dyes to find out if you take him on monday i'd guess x
sometimes it can be an allergy to something also, maybe something blew into his run that irritated him x

sounds like a minimal thing anyway hun xx

keep us updated later won't you xx

edit: as for thermometer, what's good for him and what he likes are sometimes completely different things LOL xx i've had to do it before and glad i did, even though she didn't want to speak to me for the rest of the day, cos she was then into the car to the vets too lol xx

Re: Weird eye reflection

Been to the vet this morning, who had a look and said Wilson's got a small eye infection. Gave me a cream to put in his eye twice daily, and asked me to come back on Friday to check that he's well again. Glad it wasn't anything serious I guess I just worry too much, hehe

Wilson is back in shape today so obviously feeling better, he's been eating loads to make up for the last two days and is now tearing up the house like normal
