Fat kitty needs to loose some weight.

Hey, so my cat is much to big and it is not healthy. I just got him from my dads place and he is 10 years old. His litter mate, who we also had, was also extremely fat and passed away last year. So now that my cat is living with me and I am the only one who feed's him what would be the best way to help him loose a few pounds?

Food that would be good for him?
Feeding schedule?

Anything you can come up with.

I am also from Canada, so hopefully I can purchase the same types of food as you can recommend.

I think this site gives lots of great information about how to deal with this.
Basically, ditch the dry food and choose a good quality high meat content wet food, smaller more frequent meals and no free feeding.

Re: Fat kitty needs to loose some weight.

You definately need to by-pass the dry food as the majority of them are quite high in carbs which cats don't want or need.

I have found this website:

Canned Cat Food : Pet Food Canada - Buy Natural Dog Food & Cat Food Online Direct to Your Door | PetFoodCanada.com

They stock a wet food brand called Evo - now I don't know anything about the nutrients and how good the food is, although their product description is impressive and it certainly sounds positive - but it is grain-free. This is very good and would be a help to your cat losing some pounds.

I hope that helps a bit.

Re: Fat kitty needs to loose some weight.

Moggybaby has named a very good brand of cat food which should suit your purpose, however I think it is fairly expensive. I believe that Fancy Feast is widely available in supermarket stores in Canada and that some flavours in the range are pretty low carb, also it is probably a lot cheaper to buy than Evo.
You may also want to consider feeding at least part of the diet as raw meat ( bone in )

I copied this from the Diabeticcatcare forum, but all these foods would be suitable to feed an overweight cat. You also have the option of a balanced raw diet from Feline's Choice, the contact there is Andre Mattera
