One Cat not really eating (strses?), the other is a glutton

Hey all!

Just hoping for a couple of extra opinions really. We recently got a 2nd kitten (Squeak - siamese, 6 months) as a companion for our resident cat (Baby, siamese cross, year and a half). They've both been doing really well with each other and we're happy to leave them in each others company all day now (house cats), and they play and chase each other - yesterday was even a snuggled up nap at one point!

Baby however, has really cut down on her eating. we're normally on 2 lots of wet food and some biscuits at night and she would get through it all. The first few days with the kitten she was eating like normal, but for about 3 days she ate barely anything, and yesterday managed just about a pouch, but only started that late in the day.
Normally she's quite fussy, and she eats a bit then will leave it and come back to it later. She also doesn't like most treats, most brands, and has so far refused prawns, poached chicken, tuna and anchovies.

It doesn't help that the new kitten is a massive greedy guts and will eat anything and everything. This includes Babys food if it's down so we've had to move Babys bowls to a higher shelf so the kitten can't get at it. Uch, she also goes mad if you eat chocolate and tries to get at it, and today i came home to find she'd managed to get a bag of paprika and try to hack her way into it

So - i think Babys just still stressed by the change, and will come around? But it's worrying me, and I also have no idea how to stop the kitten trying to eat everything that's in sight constantly - shes going to be big enough to get up to Babys food in a bit! I'm going to the vet for the little ones jabs on Weds so will ask them too, but anything anyone can think of will help.

Thanks

My 2 are EXACTLY the same!!! Treacle is a slow eater due to having had some teething problems, and very picky with what he likes to eat, whereas Jumpy our newbie who joined us last week is a total gobbler!!! Treacle also will eat a bit then come back to it later.

Jumpy and Treacle get on so well and Treacle really loves having him as a companion, however it's even harder for him to eat now!! I have to put Jumpy's wet food out first, and even though he digs in, he will still aim for Treacle's bowl as soon as I put that down, too!!! Treacle can hardly get a look in so I usually have to feed them in separate locations............ You may have to shut Baby in a different room with her food for half an hour so she has time to eat!

Thanks for the reply, that's what I was thinking! Ah man, she usually doesn't start eating for a good hour, or sometimes until we've gone to bed! I shall definately have to think on this. Maybe I can just buy a bigger house with more rooms ahahahaha

When I put out Treacle's breakfast, he often licks it and has a bit but then comes back and has some more a good hour or so later!! After playing and chattering at the birds

They have 2 bowls of dry food left down so they can both get some without Jumpy getting it all!! Even he can't eat from 2 bowls at the same time (although he does try!!!) But they are in the same room overnight.

I just have to supervise their wet feeding until Treacle's had his fill!!

Do you think Baby may have some teeth trouble??

Basil & Sybil are the same - Basil would eat the whole house if given half a chance while Sybil likes to pick at her food and come back to it!

I feed them both at the same time - that way Basil is distracted while Sybil has had her fill and I make sure he doesn't butt her out of the way while still eating!

Re: One Cat not really eating (strses?), the other is a glutton

I think Baby might just want some peace and quiet for dinner. Many cats don't really like eating next to another cat.

I even know of one person who built a feeding box that only the smaller cat could get into (in this case the big one was the glutton and the little one didn't get a chance to eat in peace).

But by the time the baby had grown too big for the box, the problem started again, so they made a bigger feeding box with a petporte catflap, which only the one cat could go through. That is where his food was left, and that is where he would eat.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one with 2 cats who eat so differently!! Had to give Treacle his bowl on the landing this morning

Re: One Cat not really eating (strses?), the other is a glutton

Hi All!

Is it wrong that I think the feeding box sounds like a good idea?

We've had a couple of good breakthroughs. For a start Baby is now eating again properly! Woo! Treaclesmum, the teeth thing did cross my mind, but because of inflamed gums I had her checked a couple of months ago and she's on Hills t/d for her teeth.

And the second - we went to the vets today for the little ones jabs and they think she's got worms! YAY!!! Now, that might sound odd, but if it's that causing the manic eating then hopefully once she's got rid of them it'll be slightly better! I don't know why I didn't think of that as an option really, she's pretty pot bellied but i thought she was either fat or pregnant (but couldn't feel ianything moving, phew).

Also, my main theory for Squeak was correct - the vet said she's preeeetty inbred. Bless her!

Re: One Cat not really eating (strses?), the other is a glutton

shadow has been leaving his food quite often now, and its usually on the counter for himto go back to, which lightning cudnt jump to... many failed attempts, but now hes just jumped up,gobbled up all shadows food now shadows gone back looking and its not there poor kitty he been leaving his food ever since hes been teething, hes basically gummy apart from fangs and 1 of the molars, cant put them in seperate rooms for food either cause they wont eat they just cry for eachother, so im gonna have to keep an eye on greedy guts

i used to feed lightning in his carrier because he would push shadow out the way and take his food but they have a need to see one another at all times or they panic,, so i was chuffed when shadow could jump and lightning cudnt lol
