Smile Appetite picking up

Got up this morning and Treacle still just licked and picked at his breakfast, so made appointment for the vets at 11.30am. However, since then he has had 2 goes at the dry food and a good go at the plate of boiled chicken I put down

Is definitely looking more interested in food, so may cancel the vets (will leave it until 11ish though to see how he is by then).

Maybe when a cat is neutered, the hormonal changes affect their appetite?

Re: Appetite picking up

Aha! I see it's mentioned here:-

Healthy Cat: Cat won't eat after Castration

I hope it doesn't last 2 months though!!!!!!

Re: Appetite picking up

Hi, it's great you can monitor closely his behaviour after the op, that's the safest way for a recently neutered cat, the most sensitive period being of about 2 weeks.

Mine ate normally a day after this, but each cat reacts differently.

Good luck and fast recovery, Treacle

Our recent addition, before and after still has a ravenous appetite. Hope yours picks up soon, is good you're keeping a close eye on him. Worrying when they don't eat, read an article, this is one cat owners get concerned about and the other was if cat is limping.

Re: Appetite picking up

Yes it is worrying! Especially as Treacle has never liked much wet food. He has been doing ok today, I rang in sick to work as I just couldn't monitor him otherwise. I've been offering food little and often which seems to work! He's had some more fresh chicken, some Iams wet and some of a Purely pouch. Seems to have gone off his favourite dry food almost entirely, though!! I think it must be hormonal, as Jumpy seems to think Treacle's a girl now - he sniffed his bum then tried to grab his neck and mount him....!!

Will have to watch to ensure his appetite continues to pick up over the rest of today and tomorrow. Thanks for the healing vibes, guys

Re: Appetite picking up

Has now had some dry Hills (his fave) with some hairball treats on top!

Still not had as much as usual, and seemed to be having trouble with chewing some of it, so I think it probably is because of the tooth extraction. Yesterday my mum saw Jumpy use his nose to lift up Treacle's lip and look at the spot where it was extracted!!

A definite improvement on yesterday, so if he has some breakfast tomorrow, I will go to work and let Mum look after them during the day. If he doesn't want anything to eat though, back to vets we go (really hope not!)

Re: Appetite picking up

Back to normal! Got through 3 helpings of dry last night, and almost cleaned his bowl of wet food this morning!

I think one of the kibbles in the dry food had maybe got into the cavity where he had the extraction, and it hurt when he bit down. They are small kibbles. I realised yesterday that he seemed to have gone off his dry food, but was eating small amounts of wet when I offered it every couple of hours. Wish he'd eat more wet in general - maybe now he's had the tooth extraction, he will do - he certainly polished off more of his breakfast than ever before!!!
