Unhappy 2 new kittens, 1 is ill :(

HI there,
I have got a new kitten (kitty #1) yesterday, he is healthy and playing. My other half went to his breeder and collected his kitten today. Both kittens are 13 weeks old. Kitty #2 has a runny nose and sneezes a bit. We were given antibiotics by the breeder (the vet she uses).
What should I do to Kitty #1 to prevent it getting the some illness, or cold?
Already keeping them in separate rooms, we wash hands after handling #2, changed clothes if kitty touched it or sneezed on us.
worried sick

I'm absolutely disgusted. No breeder should knowingly sell a sick kitten. They should have rung you and told you the collection date had to be postponed until it had been cleared as fit and well by their vet.

Re: 2 new kittens, 1 is ill :(

the breeder today did tell my OH that the kitten has a bit of sneeze and has been on antibiotics for a day. and that we have to continue with the cause of medication for another 4/5 days. but the kitten is eating well, played when he's awake. but the kitty cries as soon as he finds out my OH is not in the same room.. so kitty is sleeping on OH tonight.

Yes they are both vaccinated and wormed.

hmm... we will see how the kitty is in the morning, if not any better we will take him to our own vet. but kitty seems to cough a little, sounds like hairball in throat.. (he's a short hair thou?)

no no, it's too early for a hairball and I don't think kittens change their fur until they're about 6 months and even later than that.

Re: 2 new kittens, 1 is ill :(

The breeder simply should NOT sell a sick cat. Either you nurse it back to health, or if you aren't sure there will be a full recovery, the sale is off. A sick kitten is the breeder's responsibility. This attitude would be enough for me to call the entire deal off. Apparently, the breeder doesn't even have the intention of selling you a healthy kitten.

Besides, stress is a major factor in weakening a cat's immune system, so you shouldn't add to it by moving a kitten to a new home with new slaves when it is under the weather. Your other kitty is at risk, too, for the very same reason. It is still adjusting to a new home and new slaves, and is extra vulnerable as a result.

That being said, it sounds like the kitty has taken a shine to your OH and feels safe with him. I would take the little mite to the vet and ask him what he makes of it.

Re: 2 new kittens, 1 is ill :(

ah.. while collecting kitten #2 on Sunday. breeder also mentioned he has slight heart murmur but should be no problem. had no idea what it meant. but very concern with this cold the kitty has.. and worrying how to keep my kitty #1 away!
We took him to our vet on Monday, vet told us to continue with the medicine for the cold to clear up within a week... and confirmed that our kitty has severe heart murmur, the severity means it will not just go away. another blow..
At the point of finding out all this, I just got so angry with the breeder, not informing us beforehand. She found this out just before xmas and we have been calling her to check if kitten has been ok after injections, what progress he is making etc. murmur has never been mentioned.
OH called breeder on Monday night, and she reassured him that the kitten will be ok and if kitten not survive his first 2 years, we will get a replacement kitty. but the point is not about replacement pet or not.. this is affecting people's emotions!!
After several long and tearful conversations, we have decided to keep the kitten.. knowing he might not be with us for long or he could still be growing into a fun and healthy cat. as returning the kitten back to breeder, it probably means he will be put down.... knowing this, we thought we should try to give the kitten a loving home, the love and care that he deserves... but at the same time, it is painful to see him sick with this cold.. sneezing.. runny nose. but thank heavens his cough has stopped..
are we mad...

personally I would ask the breeder for a reduction in his price if it where me if you wish to keep him. its not fair that she has sold you a poorly kitten knowing he was sick. is he GCCF registered?

Re: 2 new kittens, 1 is ill :(

Indeed, you should get most, if not all, of your money back, you have not received what you paid for, i.e. a healthy kitten.
In fact, you have been conned.
The promise of a replacement kitten from an untrustworthy breeder like this is the very last thing I would be waiting for.

She needs to pay up for getting you a very sickly kitten, and if she refuses, sue her for fraud. This kitten is NOT worth any money, in fact, chances are that it is going to cost you a hell of a lot of money on vet bills. If you keep it and run the financial risk, it is out of the kindness of your heart, NOT because you have been given value for money
Kitty is a liability, NOT an asset.

As far as I can see, the breeder is counting on your being afraid she will have it put down, so she is confident she got you just where she wants you, being protective of the poor sick baby, and willing to give up your rights to save its life.
