Wet Food Help Please!!

I am becomming really stressed about my cats diet! I want them to eat the best food that I can possibly give them. The problem is that they have turned their noses up at virtually every wet food that I put in front of them.

They won't eat any pouches (hills or high-life) and have also refused to eat the Bozita, and Animonda that I bought for them. They don't like pates or meat in jelly. They don't like meat in chunks or cubes either!! The only thing that they like is either Tesco's Finest or Applaws. When I put either of these down they just DEVOUR them.

Applaws isn't a complete food, and is really pricey. Plus, it only really comes in chicken or tuna flavours. Tesco's Finest tins are virtually the same in terms of consistency, but they are a complete food so it is better, but still pretty expensive at 48p for a small 80g tin.

Another worry that I have is that I can only feed them the chicken or tuna tesco food (I can't put down anything with sardines without needing to be sick) and I have read quite a bit about how lots of tuna can be harmful to cats!!! Tesco and hi life tins are complete foods, but have a very high tuna content, so if I feed them this every other day could I be harming them??

My cats get Hills and Orijen kibble as well, but I really would prefer if they would eat mostly wet food. The more I read about what they should/shouldn't have in their diets the more confused and worried I become.

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

if there having the hills/orijin they should already be getting what they need. If they like the applaws stick to it, swapping and changing in my opinion causes more problems in the long run. ie they get fussy.

try not to worry as long as they are in good health and weight they are fine

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

Thanks. One of my cats is more fussy than the other and I've just been trying to find an affordable brand that they would BOTH eat, hence the varieties I have tried recently. Two cats = 4 tins of applaws or finest a day, which works out at £60 a month on wet food alone. If only they liked Bozita.........

I worry that they don't get enough moisture in their diet which is why I'd prefer it if they ate mostly wet food. Am concerned about the effects of feeding a lot of tuna, and not sure if the same "dangers" apply if the tuna is the main ingredient in a complete cat food.

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

Have you tried Feline Porta 21 (from zooplus)? It is very similar to Applaws, but IS a complete food and comes in large (400g) cans. So it's cheaper than Applaws too. My cats like it. Also, if you have an Asda near you, they do a food called Feline Fayre, it is also similar to Applaws and a lot cheaper. It comes in chicken and tuna varieties.
You're quite right about not feeding too much tuna - it isn't ideal for cats to have it frequently. Won't they eat any raw or cooked meats, or cooked white fish? That wouldn't be too expensive and would be a bit of variety for them.

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

They can be fed a full dry diet if you ensure plenty of water. And perhaps do a small wet meal once a day, they may be more enthusiastic then.
Applaws do a superb full dry now, well worth a go ! See their web site

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

I really wouldn't encourage anyone to feed cats solely dried food - wet food is preferable as the major part of their diet, with dry perhaps once a day in small portions.

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

Have you tried Cosma, you can get that from Zooplus the same place as the Porta 21. Mine prefer the turkey variety of Cosma to the chicken. It is in jelly, but not like the chicken version, its more shredded flesh like Applaws or Almo Nature.

You are right to prefer your cats to have a mainly wet diet, dry - no matter what the ingredients - is completely unnatural food form. Cats are designed to get most of their daily fluid intake from their natural prey which typically have a moisture content of about 70 per cent (compared to 10% moisture content in dry biscuits) Because of that, drinking doesn’t come naturally to them as they are not genetically programmed to be water drinkers being dependent on their prey as a principal source of fluid.

I hope you find a wet food they like, any wet food or fresh cooked or raw is better than dry biscuits.

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

It's wierd what oscar will and won't eat. (He's rejected some expensive foods). But he really likes butchers classic wet food which is complete and ok and very cheap so might be worth trying as part of their diet! It is in chunks with mush but you never know. I also give oscar cooked coley (100% white fish)- you can buy tesco value frozen portions which work out at about 40p each I think and you get quite a lot of fish in each one. Most supermarkets do it for a similar price. My local discount frozen food shop was selling frozen coley at 25p a portion not so long ago which was brilliant while it lasted!! I don't like fish so i hated the smell from it cooking in the microwave but i've got used to it now.

I also give him hi-life 70% tuna flakes tins complete cat food (170g, 45p) - the only hi-life he likes (pouches rejected). I'll have to be careful to not give it too often. I'd forgotten that tuna's not great for them. (unless it's ok as part of a complete food?)

He still has some dry food as well which I am trying to cut down very slowly or his tummy can't cope otherwise.

Re: Wet Food Help Please!!

Yes, cats are fussy eaters. It's only because cats most of the time don't get what they need. EVO has a kibble and wet,Try B.G Before grain. My cats eat it up.My one cat has mammary cancer and is hard to feed, but she it's this stuff right up.It is wet and have you tried mixing wet and dry together? Read this website ~ WELCOME TO RAW FED CATS ~ Click on a practicle guid to feeding cats raw.Just a suggestion.I found it pretty cool. But try and mix like 3/4 kibble and 1/4 wet food.If your cats are fairly young(under 7) then it will be o.k to let them get a little hungry so they'll eat and eat what is put in front of them. You CANNOT put a food down and just because your cat walks away from it say " well that didn't work" it will eat when it is hungry.Try and keep a rutien about it.they'll eat rest assured the next feeding time. Many foods a cat will gobble up has nasty sprayed on fats to make the cat like it.It does not mean it is good for them.Feed them a good healthy diet,Orijen,Evo(also wet) B.G before grain(really good beef) or Eagle Pack is good(also comes in wet) Make sure too your cats get a variety..fish,chicken,turkey,lamb,quail,beef...ect Never feed only one or the other. If nothing else works and u r bent on giving your cats extra water, try mixing water in the dry food so while they eat they slurp up a lil more moisture? Kibble is good for their teeth aswell,as they are used to crunching bones of small rodents.ect So unless the cats are older, a lil' kibble is good!!
Good Luck
