Raw feeding and enrichment...

Hi all!

As I have said several times before I will be eventually opening my own cat rescue so am getting as much research, designing and planning in as I can now while opening is not an option.

I have read the thread by hobbs about raw feeding before people start sending me the link (although to be fair I'll probably re-read it anyway).

I would like to raw feed maybe 2 or 3 times a week, but would not want to deliver as their every-day feeding regime. I would be well aware that not every perspective owner would be prepared to raw feed so would not want to limit the diet of any cat's in my care to raw only.

What I'm thinking is to have several feeding stations set up in different places, heights etc. giving raw food for nutritional value but also enrichment.

Would anyone have any suggestions from first hand experience of what meats the cats prefer or creative ways/places to leave the meat to provide mental enrichment. I was thinking along the lines of hanging baskets with the meat in, hiding under boxes, meat on the bone, just organs etc...

Any suggestions on how you guys would use meat for mental stimulation?

Re: Raw feeding and enrichment...

I've discovered that my cats prefer to eat their food when it is not on floor level. With the raw Mai Tai likes to take it out of the dish to eat too. The two girls both have a choice of raw and commercial wet food and happily swap between them. They also get chicken wings or drumsticks.
So, yes, I would go for your idea of giving them the food at varying heights of feeding stations and of giving them meat on the bone. With hiding the food you would need to check that it had been eaten - I can't see my two going for that idea (lazy pair) but I'm sure many cats would enjoy it
