Best wet food for cats?

It has been a long time since I had a cat, so I am not up on cat food. My old cat used to have Hi-Life fish pouches and Iams to nibble on, but I would like to hear what everyone thinks is better.

I shan't be getting Iams, as I have heard bad things about it, it is the wet I would like to know about more than anything.

Thanks.

Re: Best wet food for cats?

Would you be willing to buy online?

A just wet diet would really be so much better for your kittycat

PS: Don't you feed your dogs raw? Or am I mixing you up with someone else?

No, you are definitely mixing me up with someone else. I don't feed raw to the dogs. I am getting a cat this weekend and I am a bit out of touch with feeding. I don't mind buying online, but there isn't time really.

I always prefer wet for cats and dogs, but I used to like to leave some biscuits for my last cat as well, usually Iams or Go cat. Just as a nibble, not her whole diet.

So what do people think of Hi-Life? Bonnie used to love it and it was all pieces of fish.

Re: Best wet food for cats?

I don't think Hi-Life is too bad for one of the readily available wet foods. Natures Menu goes down quite well with mine too. Pets at Home do their own range, Purely which is quite good.

Re: Best wet food for cats?

Well, there might still be time after all as you should really feed your new kitty what s/he was fed before s/he came to you to avoid upsetting the system even more (some cats find settling into new environments very upsetting; some take it in their stride). So, while you are feeding him/her what s/he is used to, you could place an order online.

I personally wouldn't feed Hilife as a sole food; also expensive for what it is (though there are some good deals around) and some of the range is complementary food anyhow.

Zooplus has a good range of better foods, all of which are pate foods. So, it really depends on whether the cat is ok with that texture. If yes, then the world of decent cat food is your oyster. Have a look on zooplus for the likes of Grau (though it contains a bit of grain - all declared and not too much; they also do a grain-free version that is of lesser quality but costs more) it is a good food. Then there are the likes of Animonda Carny (the meat; not the fish), Smilla (zooplus own range) and Bozita (but go for the pates).

If you want truly good food at a good price you have to order from German shops who ship to the UK. Shipping costs are very decent and more and more people on here are taking this route.

Re dry, if you really want to feed dry, get a treatball and get some grain-free food, such as orijen or acana.

How old is your new kitty?

Hope that helps

She is about a year old. You see, I have never heard of any of the ones you mention. Like I said, out of touch! Bonnie used to love Hi-Life fish or those gourmet tins, but I never went into it much just bought her what looked good and what she would eat. She would only eat fish or chicken ones, never anything else.

I can get Natures Menu from the local farm shop where I get my dog food, so I might have a look at that.

Re: Best wet food for cats?

Just to add to my previous post

one certain "do" when it comes to wet (and dry) feeding in my opinion is to find a few (say 3 or 4) brands of food of equal quality that your cats will eat and feed them and their flavours in rotation. That is for three main reasons:

1) it helps combat possible boredom with their food
2) no food is perfect and by feeding a few different foods you are maximising the chance that you are feeding a balanced diet in terms of nutrients (and are minimising the likelihood of any harm if you are feeding a food that has got a nutritional problem or that is in some way contaminated)
3) if a manufacturer changes the recipe or even discontinues a certain product you are feeding then you are not stuck up the creek scrambling around for something else your cats might eat. And them tinkering with their recipes happens more often than you might think.

So, don't put your cat food eggs in just one basket

Nature's menu is an easily available food with a highish meat content but it is expensive for what it is and it still contains various sugars (though apparently they have recently changed the recipe and it is now sugar free but someone has yet to post that they have fed one of those)

If you want to get to grips with brands have a look here: pdf link of brands and information at the bottom of that page: https://sites.google.com/site/wetcatfoodlist/

If you haven't bought cat food for a while and haven't looked on zooplus and the German shops, then boy are you in for a treat!

That brings back memories! My old ginger tom would only eat Whiskas, nothing else, and then without any warning on the labels or anything, they changed it to chunks! He would not touch chunks, not even after I had crunched them up in the food processor. I finally managed to get him to eat Choosy salmon, which I had to order in specially, then they stopped making it.

By the time he was about fifteen, he was having mostly tinned tuna or salmon! Why are cats so damned fussy?!!

Because they can!

But your old cat's diet in the end doesn't sound like the most balanced if it was human tinned tuna and salmon.

Do you know what your new kittycat is currently eating so you can get some of that in for the interim period?
