Re: Could my kitten be deaf?

Usually you can figure out on your own if a cat is deaf. Place the cat in a quiet room without any stimulans and then make different kind of noises. Make sure the cat doesn't see you making noises.

If you're still unsure after testing on your own you can have a vet do a BAER-test. That'll tell for sure if the kitten is deaf or not. A BAER-test however won't tell you if the hearing only is reduced. It'll only tell you if the kitten hears or not.

I've raised a deaf kitten and we saw signs of deafness as early as when he was only 4 weeks old. At 8 weeks of age we were completely sure he was deaf. Never had to do a BAER-test to confirm it.

Do not want to crash your thread
I could be talking a load of rubbish as I do not really know a lot about cats - but when I wqs a child we had a white cat who was deaf - I was told this is common in white cats - can someone confirm - just out of interest.

sue

Deafness is linked to white in cats. It's estimated that 80% of the white and blue eyed domestic shorthairs/longhairs are deaf and 20% of the yellow eyed domestic shorthairs/longhairs. It's much more rare in purebreds since we don't breed deaf cats. According to a Swedish study about 5% of the white Devon and Cornish Rexes are deaf.

Re: Could my kitten be deaf?

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all your advice.

Sorry I havent got back to you all sooner, I was hit by a sickness and diahorea bug the last couple of weeks and unfortuantely I dont have a computer at home!

I took Milo to the vet and the vet could not confirm he was completely deaf but she thinks he may be. She said it is really hard to test whether they can hear or not as their other senses will be 100 times better and will even see the smallest movement rather than hear it. I have to keep an eye on him and take him back to the vet for further tests when he turns one in May.

I also now have another dilemma which I will put on a new thread!!

Thank you all once again and I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Lori xx
