Re: Abscess??

My Bailey is prone to absesses which can also be caused from a bite from another cat (he used to get them when defending the homestead - I still live in hope that he will eventually leave this to his sister as she is not allergic) Anyway! The first couple that he had the vet did not drain the absess as they caught it in the early stages so the antibiotic did its job. The third time he had one on the base of his tail. We had been away for the weekend, and when we arrived home I spotted the huge lump! We took him to the vets the next morning and they drained as well as gave him the antibiotic.

So basically, it will go down on its own so don't worry.

Oh thank goodness! That's awesome to know! How long did it take to go down when they didn't drain it?

Re: Abscess??

Well, one of them was on his front right leg, to the point where he was limping on it. The pain meds had him walking on it by that evening, the absess had gone down, I would say over the next 72 hours. Because he is alergic as well, he lost his fur around the area (but only on the leg one, not the tail) and that came back pretty sharpish as well.

I would suggest giving the vets a call back if the absess is still there after a week. The meds should do their bit as it will cover him for two weeks, but just to put your mind at ease.

It's likely however that it should have gone by the weekend.

Hope that helps!

Re: Abscess??

Definitely feeling smaller today!

I guess it takes a bit longer because the antibiotic he had was Convenia, which is long-acting over a period of 2 weeks. It will be a week tomorrow since he had it, so seems to be doing well now I guess the antibiotic works by drying out the abscess from the inside out?

Re: Abscess??

The vet said it was much better when she checked it last Thursday when he went for his vaccinations They reckon the lump is just the tissue. It doesn't seem painful now and he's certainly not bothered by it.

Still, I don't like the thought of this lump being stuck on my kitten's back

Maybe they can get it sorted when he's neutered if it's still there?
