Re: Poorly Kitten, Please help me :(

I cannot get him to take the Metronizadole without crushing it.....we tried putting half tablets in cheese, ham & choc but they're such a bitter taste he would leave it. We then tried to force him to swallow it but even with two of us holding him we couldnt manage it as he was getting very irate and would lash out/bite/scrtach us and just spit it out.

I called the vets and said I dont know what to do and they said crush it into some wet food, so we did, and it seemed to fool him into eating it.

As of last night he's on a diet of plain chicken and a tiny bit of boiled rice.....will see how that goes.

I will get some Protexin PRO KOLIN Enterogenic off the net, thanks for the info

I've since thrown the Metronidazole packet away so dont know what mg the tablets were.

I've seen on the net people saying you can take them both together as you have done successfully but for some reason my vets said no, as I said before I'm becoming very disillusioned with there abilities now !

I know, it's very difficult giving some cats tablets - I struggled too. I think chocolate is a no no for cats. I found smearing it in butter and putting it on a plate on the floor with just one piece of kibble stuck to each side of the tablet amazingly effective!

I don't know what to make of the vet saying to crush them up - I wish I could have done that! Maybe someone with medical knowledge on here can give an opinion on this?

Regarding the cat litter you mentioned in a previous post, I think just try to clean it (what ever type) as soon as possible to reduce the chance of poop being trodden in and tracked around - difficult, I know, when you're working.

Are there any other vets near you? If you could ring a different vet and ask them how they would treat Giardia for a cat of that age and weight it may shed some light on whether it can be done in a different way.

Re: Poorly Kitten, Please help me :(

I was against the chocolate but my girlfriend tried it just to see if we actually could get the tablet down him....she warmed the choc up so it was a small melted chunk and pushed the 1/2 tablet in but he just licked the choc and left the tablet.

Putting in in a small lump of cheese worked first time, then the next time he blanked it.

I think I'm going to continue with the cheap litter for now, it gets totally changed 2-3 times a day anyway so seems pointless using expensive stuff.

How often did you cat go when he was ill ? I changed Oreo's litter tray at 10pm last night before I went to bed, when I woke up at 5.30am there was 3 waiting for me in there ! That was cleaned out, tray washed with disinfectant and new litter....I would estimate there will be 4 waiting for me when I get home.

I'm a bit loath to move him to a 3rd vet but I might have to bite the bullet and do it as I'm fast losing patience with this one as it's costing me hundreds of pounds a month for no improvement and my little boy is suffering !

A friend at work has an auntie who's a vet nurse up in Wales, she asked her and her first responce was to try both drugs together !!!

I can get the Panicure and Pro-kolin off the internet but need a prescription for the Metronizadole

Hi,

Yes, cheese worked for a couple of goes then he refused it, same as yours. The buttered tablet stuck to a piece of kibble was never refused! Buttered tablet on it's own - just licked the butter off

My cat may have had (may still have, at it takes a long time of diet trials to find out) dietry issues at around the same time which may skew which was causing what. He was only going slightly more often than normal at about once a day. During the worst week when he was having terrible cow pat 'dire rear' and vomiting green/yellow bile he may have gone a couple of times a day - but I think the Giardia may have been knocked back quickly before it could escalate. Like I said before, there could be other factors causing so much dire rear for your cat.

I wouldn't give any more medication, even the Panacur, without consulting a vet about all the treatment he's had so far. You don't need to change vets to see a vet at another practice. If you could talk to a vet on the phone first about their method of treatment, you may feel more confident to go see them if you like what you hear.

Re: Poorly Kitten, Please help me :(

Yaris,

Just a bit of extra info. for you when discussing treatment with the vet...

This website may help for an indication of dosages:

NOAH Compendium of Animal Medicines: Stomorgyl 2, 10, 20 Film-coated Tablets - Dosage and administration

This is assuming you were given Stomorgyl. My cat was given 'Stomorgyl 2'.

The instructions say not to crush the tablets.

Whatever you do, don't EVER give chocolate to a cat, it is poisonous to them and may be lethal.
