how to calm down nervous cat for 2 hour car trip??

hello all
we are going for a family-christmas visit down, for 4 days. We can't leave our two cats at home, not an option. The car journey is about 2 1/2 hours.
One of them (one year-old girl) is quite nervous in the carrier in the car, she pants and is clearly scared. How can I calm her down, is there anything I can give her that is safe and doesn't knock her out completely? Something from the vet's maybe?

thanks!!

Hi & Welcome. Feliway spray is very good. You can spray the carrier and car just before the cat travels. Your vet should have that

Re: how to calm down nervous cat for 2 hour car trip??

we have used a feliway diffuser in the house when little Bella just moved in, as The Second Cat
Does the valerian make them sleepy or just happy?

I think I might get both...

thank you, experts

Re: how to calm down nervous cat for 2 hour car trip??

We never had any luck with the Feliway products. On Saturday we are moving house, and we're in the similar situation to you, neither of our cats travel well, and its going to be a 7 hour journey. We got sedatives from the vets, I don't know their name, but its one tablet per kilo of the cats weight.

I don't know how sucessful they are for every cat, but friends of ours who moved away gave their cat half one of these tablets and it made him woozy. He wasn't completely knocked out (being a kitten they didn't want to give him too much), but he didn't get sick, dribble or get worked up, he just curled up and went to sleep.

I'll update this thread on how successful the tablets were on Saturday night.

We use valerian on our kittens sometimes. They lick a drop off our hands and half an hour later they're sleeping nicely!

Hello you might want to consider using Zyklene. Its a non prescription drug we got our first packet from our vets but discovered it much cheaper on-line we used Vet-medic. It comes in capsules 1 tablet per day for cats up to 5 kg you open the capsule and sprinkle it on their food. My little persian found it very palatable and we have noticed that she is a lot calmer. Can be used long-term or just for a few days when a stress ful time will occur. Hope this helps.
