Raw food for diabetic cat?

Hello everyone! I'm very new to this forum, so apologies if there are other posts covering this.

My lovely Tozi (a garden foundling nearly 3 years ago) is in his early teens and was diagnosed diabetic a year ago. He's not on insulin, as this was not appropriate for him, and I have been feeding him Grau. He's done well on this, but he's getting bored with it, and I've ordered a variety of DAF minces that should arrive next week. I'm sure my other three will benefit from better food and was wondering if anyone else has fed a raw-food diet to their diabetic cat? I'd be really grateful to hear your experiences.

PS He's called Tozi because he has an extra toe on each foot - sad, but true !

Re: Raw food for diabetic cat?

Hi and welcome!!

Did you know that feeding raw is probably the best thing you can do for your diabetic cat? So, well done you for considering it. If you can possibly get hold of the book "Your Cat" by Dr Elizabeth Hodgkins, she is a US vet who has actually patented a feline diabetic diet that is based on feeding raw. Here's her website: YourDiabeticCat.com - Helping and Preventing Feline Diabetes

All the best with Tozi!

Re: Raw food for diabetic cat?

I agree with Misi.....but would recommend Home | Diabetic Cat Care or Home | Diabetic Cat Care and the attached forum. The site that Misi lists is a little frosty and not very well populated, whereas DCC are a very friendly bunch and work with the same protocol as designed by Dr Hodgkins.
I fed my diabetic cat Paddy a fair bit of raw food and it certainly helped his BG.
Do you home test to keep an eye on his BG??

Re: Raw food for diabetic cat?

What an excellent site! Thank you, Misi and Paddypaws . I've registered with the forum and will be in there for a read as soon as I can be.

I had read some forums when Tozi was first diagnosed and they seemed somewhat judgemental of those that did not share their particular viewpoint, so I avoided them. I understand that some people will not agree with my decision not to treat Tozi, but I had to consider what was best for him and how to give him the best quality of life according to his needs - each to their own.

I don't blood test Tozi as that would be very traumatic for him - I have to wait till he's deeply asleep and sneak up on him just to Frontline him!

Re: Raw food for diabetic cat?

Well I am a strong advocate for home testing so wont go into that debate!
If he does well on Grau then you could also consider the Bozita TINS ( not cartons unless its the pate ones as another choice to rotate.
Funnily enough some cats get higher BG with raw than with the low carb tinned, but if you are not testing you wont know that ( oops, couldn't help myself, sorry! )

Re: Raw food for diabetic cat?

Hi Paddypaws, Tozi started on Bozita, but did better on Grau. The others get Bozita so he does get some of that when he turns his nose up at his own food. I'll be moving the others three to raw food too, but Loki is very picky and has walked away from raw so far unless it has been well hidden in his usual food

Tozi really doesn't cope well with anything invasive, so I keep an eye on how much he drinks (and wees!) and on his weight and general condition. My Cleo also has health issues, which I knew about when I adopted her, and she's such a cuddle-grub I could do anything with her, but Tozi's very much against interference.

Hi Space Chick *waves back enthusiastically* good to see you here too . So far Tozi's been the one who's liked the raw food best and has eagerly chomped his way though chicken chunks and wings. It's more a case of me being concerned at whether a change to a raw food diet is going to be good for him.

I'll give raw food a go and we can always change back if he or any of the others look like they're not thriving for any reason.
