Thumbs down Things Are Getting Worse

I posted back in March about my female cat who was "pretend spraying".
She still does this but, she's becoming more aggressive towards her brother.

Spice (the male) does want company of his own kind. He'll ask Smudge (the female) to play and he will be completely submissive, roll over and show his belly kind of thing.

Smudge as over the past months started to growl at him, she'll hiss and spit if they so much as pass in the hallway. And just recently she's started to try and take over Spice's sleeping area's.

Spice just gives in most of the time and only takes offense when she actually swats him - he's had a couple of nasty scratches across his nose recently.

At first I thought maybe he was causing the problems but he's actually being very placid. If she's in his bed, then he'll just go elsewhere.
But if she can see him 9 times out of 10 she'll start growling then hissing and spitting.

We've got a feliway diffuser that's been on for a couple of weeks now and there is absolutely no difference in either cat at all.

They are fed next to each other and there is never any aggression at meal times. Each cat will go to it's own bowl as soon as I put the food down. They have a fountain to drink from. Even when we give treats there isn't aggression, one cat will go to hubby and get it's treats while I will give them to the other.

Any help is greatfully received, because right now it feel like my only answer is to re-home her, which would be extremely stressful on her and I can't see many people wanting a 6 year old cat anyway.

ps: sorry I just realised I posted this under the wrong forum.

Are they neutered? As this can cause problems if they aren't.

Yes, they were both neutered just before they were 6 months old - they'll be 6 years old next month.

Re: Things Are Getting Worse

Hi,

I know people have asked if she is spayed thinking that if she had not she would be more agressive. I have 6 cats and one female i did not have spayed till she was about 2 years old and i found once she had been spayed she started to behave more aggressively towards our other cats. before she was very loving with them and playful, we also have her daughter and since she has been spayed she is aggressive towards her also.

I also noticed with my eldest tom that he was a scaredy cat until i had him neutered, after that he became top cat in the neighbourhood so to speak and fought any local tom away.

I notice now with the queen we had spayed that she likes to be left alone and does not wish to play with the other cats but as we have so many they seem to leave her alone and play together. Maybe your girl just wants to be left alone to relax maybe??

Have you thought about getting a playmate for the tom and it may give her a little peace...or maybe even put her in her place even??

Re: Things Are Getting Worse

Thanks for the suggestions.
Looks like a trip to the vet.
She's fit and well, if a little over weight (6.5kg), although she eats less than her brother (5.5kg and he's sleek). Regularly wormed and flea treated.
From birth, through neutering until she got to about 5 years old she was fine. Then March time she started this pretend spraying (backing up, vibrating her tail, stamping her feet, but nothing coming out), then since then she has slowly got more and more aggressive towards her brother (but not over food).

I'd love another kitty, but there's no way hubby would allow me to have another, at least not until we manage to move into a bigger property. I doubt very much that Smudge would tolerate another cat - I do think she'd like to be in a single cat household.
Although on that thought if it were possible would another male be best or a female? Young or of similar age?
