Re: is the food im feeding my cat ok for her ??

did you read the thread I up on your other thread?

Whiskas is 'okay' for your cat - but it's like feeding her MacDonalds every day - there are many better and as cheap if not cheaper products out there. Read the thread and it will give you loads of food for thought.

Dry isn't necessary at all and unless it is a top quality grain free one I would avoid it.

Re: is the food im feeding my cat ok for her ??

I think Whiskas is fine for some cats, as long as she is healthy, no need to change, unless you really want to.

I've tried so many of the 'high quality' foods over the past two years, and my cats have been nothing but perfect on a combi of Go Cat dry, Burns Dry and Whiskas or Felix pouches.

It sounds fine to me. If you can afford a better quality food than whiskas, give it a try, but if not I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

Dry food isn't strictly necessary, but it can be good for keeping teeth clean. We actually feed our two a "complete" dry food in the morning and then a tin of some "complementary" wet food in the evening. As long as their main food, be it the dry or the wet, is "complete" (it will say on the label and I'm sure whiskas is), you should be ok.

Don't go overboard on the treats like ham and cheese, but we all like to treat our babies sometimes, don't we? I doubt occasional tidbits will do any harm.

They may be "happy" but you are giving them a poor quality diet when you consider what they could be having for the same price. Go Cat is a terrible food. Lots of grains/fillers. Cats do not naturally eat grains so why feed them. It's a very poor food. The wet food you are giving them is the same. Lots of grain plus jelly/gravy fillers.
It's your choice of course but you could give them much better for the same price.

This is a myth. It's like saying "I eat hard pretzels to clean my teeth!" If anything, the dry food sticks in the teeth, potentially causing decay.

There is no evidence to support the claim that general dry food helps the teeth. Only very very slightly may the large kibble dry have any impact on the teeth, and this is minimal. Most cats juicy chuck it down their necks whole so how can this help. Apart from it being "not strictly necessary" it does more harm than good. Cats do not drink large amounts of water as they are designed to absorb water from their prey. You feed dry and that cats thirst for water is not strong enough for them to drink what they need. This makes them more at risk of urinary tract problems in later life.

To littleblackcat

At the moment you are not giving her the best.
I really urge you to consider a wet diet of a decent quality. By this I mean a high meat content and grain free (not a high price tag)
Have a look on zooplus.co.uk at their wet foods. A good place to start is to try Smilla, animonda carney and bozita. Take it very slowly, introduce each one gradually over a week or more. These work out around same price as supermarket shelf foods and you are not wasting money on fillers. You will prob find she eats less of it as it's more filling.

You don't need to stick to kitten food. If you feed a hood quality wet food then adult food is fine. My kitten has always been on adult food.
Kitten milk is not necessary. I'd suggest cutting that out.

I don't think you've had much good advice on this thread so far. I hope you consider these wet feeds for the health of your cat. You may save on vet bills in the future

What she said. And what the others above said. Cats are obligate carnivores by nature, meaning they cannot digest grains. So, sure it might be cheaper to give your cat something that has grains and fillers, but is it really when all that happens is that the cat poops it out, undigested and un-utilized?

And if that doesn't sway you, maybe this will.....we just adopted two kittens from the local shelter on 12/31. They have been staying in their own room, with the door shut, until they were cleared by a vet and we could do gradual introductions. They were fed some basic food like Friskies or Whiskas at the shelter. For the first three days, their poo stank up the room. There was a definite stink in there, what with the door being shut and all. This morning, after they've been eating a high quality wet food (we feed Tiki Cat and Weruva, as they both have human grade ingredients) for 3 days, the room was not stinky at all. Poops were firmer and drier. Coats are already looking better (although I imagine this comes from not living in cages anymore). I think the difference is that they are using all the nutrients coming into their little bodies. They are no longer just passing all the grains and fillers.

Additionally, you should check the ingredients list on whatever food you are feeding. If anything "by-product" shows up, run away. By products include feet and beaks and heads. They are all the icky, non-food parts, all ground up. Over here in the US, they get these items from food rendering plants and I've read horror stories of exactly what goes into the vat, especially when the term on the label is the vague and ominous "animal by-products". I'll let you use your own imagination, but here's a hint--have you ever wondered what they do with the bodies of euthanized pets in kill shelters?
