Giving eye drops

Mischief (13 year old moggie) has conjunctivitis and I am supposed to put eye drops in the middle of her eye twice a day. I've tried three times now but not managed it.

She is usually a laid back, friendly, purry sort of moggie, but when I am trying to put these drops into her eyes she hisses and growls and tries to scratch and bite me. I am finding I can't hold her, hold her eye open and put the drops in at the same time (I live alone so have no-one to help me). I am missing the actual eye and getting it on the surrounding fur which is no good

It's now getting that when she sees me coming towards her she is running away - even when I am just going to give her a stroke.

I feel a really bad slave - she is beginning to hate me and her eye isn't getting the medication it needs .

Any suggestions would be really gratefully received. My vet managed it - but then I was holding Mischief so she only had to open the eye and squirt - not hold her as well.

Re: Giving eye drops

Maybe speak to your vet and ask if they can give you cream, explain that you live alone and have no-one on hand to help, coz it sounds like you really need someone to help otherwise you'll be fighting a losing battle

Re: Giving eye drops

You could try putting her in a duffle bag type bag with a drawstring neck like an old fashioned p.e. bag. That way her paws will be out of the way. Hold the bag between your knees and then try to put the eyedrops in. I say try - it still might not be possible as she will still struggle I'm sure.
or perhaps you have a neighbour whose help you could enlist?
good luck.

Re: Giving eye drops

I learnt how to do it on my own, it can be done, and my cats are just as nutty if you need to do something like this!! x

you need to basically have her underneath you, kneeling over her but keeping your legs holding her firmly where she is x

hold her head up from under her chin, use thumb to pull eyelid back, using other hand use pinky to hold bottom of eyelid, then squeeze a small drop in x

once you get used to it it's like second nature hun x but you can't be scared to hold her still, she will forgive you as she'll realise you're not trying to hurt her, just trying to help her xx

good luck hun xx
