I always make the point that X-rays have their limitations are only as good as the person who 'reads' them and with few exceptions (in this instance especially) need to be interpreted by a specialist. Things like shadows for example can very easily be misinterpreted. Furthermore often a few films need to be taken in order to obtain the correct diagnosis.
Sounds to me something is irritating the bronchial passages and I wonder if something in the environment could be a trigger? Any smokers for instance?
Lungworm?

It was the vet who referred me to the specialist but on the basis of the wrong x-rays. When the specialist showed me the x-rays it was immediately evident that the other cat had two large pulmonary masses, poor thing. She said that she would not anyway have done a biopsy on Max unless she had been able to find a mass by ultrasound.
Yes, it does sound like a bronchial cough but it only occurs every few days. Most of the time he is fine so I doubt that lungworm would be the cause as that usuallys makes a cat morose. Cat litter dust is certainly a possibility as Max is the sort of cat that comes indoors to go to the toilet, even in the summer.
