Exclamation Feline conjutivitus

I have 1year old male cat who has calicivirus as a result suffers from chronic conjutivitus . He is on geneticin drops but is getting very regular flare up any advice how make him more comfortable . I add l lysine when he has flare up to his food and use camomile tea bags on his eyes to soothe the pain. He still looks in great pain and cries alot .

Lysine is for herpesvirus. The conjunctivitis sounds more like herpes too. If it is herpes then there are two things which may help. You need to use a maintenance dose of lysine all the time which could prevent the flare ups. The second, which you'll need to discuss with your vet, is an anti viral drug called Famciclovir. As far as I know it isn't licensed for cats so you'd probably need sign a disclaimer for off label use but I'm hearing more and more about it from the US and all positive.

Although they are both 'cat flu', I believe they're different viruses, with calici being the 'lesser of 2 evils'. Did you have your cat tested for feline chlamydiosis? That can also cause conjunctivitis.

Re: Feline conjutivitus

Yes this is what the vet originally thought he had bt he tested negative I got him as a rescue he would get a flare up every 3weeks then in June 2011 he got his last one and it didn't return till dec2011 now in has had 3in a matter of weeks .dont know if it stress as my other cat has been very sick with vomiting and didn't eat for days he had be taken in vets put on a drip for few days.he is back now and seems much better except for little diarrhea yester and no poops today.think that to do with changing his food over.the vet told me to put him on hills science diet for nuetered cats am doing a 80%\20% change.its all go here with the two of them have my heart broken

Re: Feline conjutivitus

So he's negative for chlamydia and herpes? If so, that's a positive!

I believe that conjunctivitis, if a cat is prone to this, can flare up during times of stress. Conjunctivitis can sometimes be difficult to treat too and if the treatment your vet has prescribed isn't working, please take your cat back to the vet for alternative meds.

I hope that your cats have a speedy recovery, it's very draining having poorly furries.

Oh dear, sounds like you had a tough time!

Perhaps next Christmas, just pretend it's a regular day and the cats might not notice the date

I really hope that things start to improve for you soon.

As a matter of interest, what meds has your vet prescribed for the conjunctivitis (now and in the past)?
