Dental care

How do you help your cats with their teeth?
Do you brush them? If so what paste and type of brush do they like?

Do the raw chicken wings help much do you think? I'm trying those soon anyway.

Are there any GOOD (grain free) dry foods he could have as a treat in his ball which are large enough to do any good?

Re: Dental care

Our new cat has gingivitis and has had teeth removed despite being only about 4years old.
Dentist have given us some antibiotics and meta am but also a fish flavoured toothpaste called Virbac. The cat is unimpressed by me messing with her mouth but seems to like the taste of the paste.

Re: Dental care

Sooooo.... I'm a dentist, right? And two weeks ago we took Ari to the vet and he showed us the tartar built on her upper back teeth (I suppose that's the parotid gland like humans that pour fresh saliva in that area) and redness on the gums around them. I got petrified. I give her sugar-free food, low carb, no grain and the occasional raw! How could she have plaque! (I blame OH for giving her too much probiotic yoghurt)

The vet tried to persuade me to give her a specially formulated food that help cleaning teeth and quit on the wet food. Well, you know that those words nearly made me laugh, right? Then he said that we could try brushing her teeth or doing the professional cleaning, which I refused (for many reasons, the main one is that is way better to have good health all year round than just once a year). So...

... I got the Virbac kit at the vet (even if the enzymatic thing made me laugh) and I'm still on the phase where I train the cat to be comfortable on having me rubbing my fingers on the teeth. I moved briefly to the phase of tasting the paste and she hated the flavour, so I suppose I'll have to brush her teeth with Bozita paté

Re: Dental care

Plaque off has been quite effective with our male neuter. We just sprinkle it over his dry food.

Re: Dental care

Chunks of raw food, chicken necks and chicken wings. If there is a problem with plaque, I've had experience with plaque off and it has worked.

It is highly unlikely that any sized dry food will help with teeth.
