Re: toxoplasmosis

I haven't had any personal experience of toxoplasmosis although I know there are people on here that have so hopefully they will be along soon. If it turns out to be toxoplasmosis then it is usually quite treatable especially if caught early although in some cases it can take a lot of time and patience. I have seen some horrendous cases on the internet that have gone on to make a full recovery.

I wouldn't jump the gun though whilst Toxoplasmosis can cause seizures it is a rare cause. I assume full blood profile is being done along with tests for infectious causes. What symptoms has he got?

Re: toxoplasmosis

Ali thanks for your reply, all blood screening has been done, liver/kidney funtion ones came back ok, will have to wait till next week for toxoplamosis results back, the cat was sick a few times and had slight upset tum 10 days ago and was rather sluggish so daughter took him to vet and was told it was possible viral infection, gave painkilling jab, and told to keep an eye on cat, he seemed to pick up and sickness etc stopped then all of a sudden yesterday he had a fit, cat is home now and alot more with it, daughter spoke to vet this morning after reading up on internet about toxo and it says if its that, a long course of antibiotics will cure him, so vet have given 5 day course of them to cover till results are through.

Re: toxoplasmosis

Just a thought but there's nothing new plant wise been brought into the house over the Christmas period is there? As I'm sure you're aware many are toxic to cats and can cause vomitting and seizures if ingested, sometimes it's easy to overlook these things.

Glad to hear the bloods have come back okay so far, hopefully you will have an answer soon.

She has been ringing the vets every day this week for results and today was told oh sorry results came back 48 hrs ago and have been overlooked !!!! my daughter has to take her cat back to vets tomorrow and sadly it looks like she will have to be pts,, she has been on antibiotics for a week and they have had no effect, the vet says the blood test readings are the highest shes ever seen,,, my daughter and her family are devastasted as their cat is such a big part of their lives, i have printed off the poem Rainbow bridge for my g/son as i have told him this is where Harley Boy will go to live .

Re: toxoplasmosis

Hazel-only just catching up here. Not very impressed with the delay in relaying results considering how serious vets appear to view this prognosis. However, this is only their opinion so I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

I wouldn't consider PTS without first trying a different/much longer course of antibiotics or seeking out a second opinion here. Sounds to me as if vets are giving up at the first hurdle and your daughter needs a more proactive set of professionals so I think a second opinion would be best all around.

Hope it's sorted out soon and he makes a full recovery though I can't see this happening if he remains with current vets!

Good luck!

But 10 days ago the blood results were ok, I personnaly can't understand that sudden change ... or maybe I understand something else: your daughter called the vets every day for the results, and the vets said they were there for 2 days, but nobody mentioned them. I understand that those vets have found a very easy solution for them (not for the cat). I understand there's a high possibility that those results are not even your cat's real results. That's all I understand

I believe if you go to another vet, your cat will soon be healthy again. She is 2 years old, she's very young, I'm sure she'll be all right.

Re: toxoplasmosis

So sorry to hear that things don't look so good but as mentioned above I would at very least get a second opinion before making any decision.

How is the cat in himself as obviously a lot will depend on this but if he still seems reasonably well and as though he's still got some fight left I wouldn't give up hope just yet.

When you say the blood test results are very high are you talking about antibody titre count?

What antibiotics is he on? I'm guessing it's antirobe / clindamycin as this is most commonly used to treat toxo. Is he on anything else? I believe the current thought is that the best line of treatment is clindamycin used in conjunction with pyrimethamine. If the clindamycin isn't producing any results then sulfadiazine is often used as an alternative.

I'm not sure if your vet is used to treating Toxo but my understanding is it can take take some time to see results, often cats can take many months and even a year plus to fully recover.

Re: toxoplasmosis

Sadly my daughters cat had to be PTS today, it turned out apart from the very high readings of the results ,the effects of the very bad fit had left him unable to ever fully recover,
