Are my two cats being fussy?

Hi all, first post here

As a quick introduction, my partner and I own two dark tortoise shell coloured female kittens called Millie and Mollie, now 6 months old. They were both from the same litter and inseparable. They are almost identical!

Since we have bought them home in September, we have been feeding them a tin each of Feline Fayre in the mornings and the evenings. For lunch they each get a serving of James Well Beloved dry kitten food.

This has been going great until recently, when one of them just doesnt want to eat the Feline Fayre anymore. She will eagerly sit watching me serve it into the bowls, but as soon as I put it down for them she will have a sniff then just start scratching round the bowl then walk off. I assume she is just leaving her scent? Sometimes she may come back a while later and have a bit of it, but there is always at least half a tin remaining.

The other one isnt bothered, and still wolfs it down. With the dry food, they both graze at that throughout the afternoon, but they both do all eat it by evening time. So no issues with the dry. I should also point out that their behavour is still just fine, and no change in stools or anything.

When they were at the breeders, they had them on Felix wet kitten pocuches from 8 weeks. So I decided last night to mix in half a felix pouch along with half a tin of Feline Fayre. Low and behold she devoured the Felix and left the Feline Fayre

We have always mixed the flavours of the Fayre food. We get four different varieties and ensure they have a different flavour each mealtime. A couple of weeks ago I stocked up on about 60 tins of the stuff

So im after some opinions....is it a case that they are just fed up of this now and I should try them on another variety?

A second thing as well, am I feeding them enough? They are growing beautifully. They are not fat, and their coats are awesomely shiny, but Im not sure if I should be feeding them more especially when the back of Felix says between 4-6 puches a day! (possibly taking into account the low quality of its food?!)

Apologies for essay!

Hi
No idea why the sudden change of heart on the food but would suggest maybe you consider feeding them a pate style food rather than one in jelly ( as far as I know FF is in jelly) this is merely a can filler which cats do love to eat but does them no good, doesn't fill their tum and wastes your money.
I feed my 4 month old Smilla and Animonda carney which are both pate style. I mix a bit of warm water with it to make easier to eat. I find he eats about 200gm per day. It's more filling. Dry is only given in a treat ball for fun

At 6 months feed as much as they want to eat.

Pate food sounds good. I think this time ill grab a small amount of a few different kinds before comitting to buying another bulk load.

They are indoor cats. Am I ok in feeding them as much as they want?

Re: Are my two cats being fussy?

I started off with jelly food for my 19 week old but after the first we days we had her, she seemed to go off it completely and stick to the dry food. She'd do the same, sniff it and then walk away and by the end of the day it would all still be in the bowl and she'd just have the dry food.

I then bought a single pouch (it's almost like purée/paste) to try it out and low and behold she finished off the whole thing, so now I've switched to that and she loves it. She goes through about 3-4 pouches a day.

sounds like you are over feed them, 4-6 pouches a day? my 2 are fussy well tabby is the worst she will not eat any food pouches in gravy but the jelly ones she will eat,

you say they scratched around the food bowl is it like they are trying to cover it? Tabby would do this when we first got her, and yes we were over feeding her, now they get a pouch between them first thing, dinner time again the same, and at night time I give them a few dreamies cat biscuits I dont know what they put into them but they love them.
at bed time they have a bit out of a pouch each and shut in the kitchen.

these two will not go near Felix, asda s own or whiskers we have tried the lot, these 2 have kitekat pouches and a bit of royal cannin kibble but that's only if we are going out the house,

try giving them less food cats will not overeat kitten will, but bigger cats will not,

these two now will come up to us meowing or be very attentive over us like a rash cannot settle,(especially Chloe) until we get up and give them some food
its better to not over-face them or they will leave the lot

Sorry but that is not true,it is very difficult to over feed kittens. The better the quality, the less they need but no kitten should be restricted in the food allowed.
If you dont mind ordering online ,try Zoo plus for some good ,high meat content food,it is not as expensive as it seems,as the higher meat content usually means they will need less, dont know if you have had a look at this ...Feeding cats for beginners (and more seasoned cat owners alike) it is full of good advice and written by our own "nutrition guru" hobbs.

Re: Are my two cats being fussy?

try to rotate brands and flavours that why they don't tend to get too fussy.

Re: Are my two cats being fussy?

Welcome to the forum!

I would rotate more brands, just to make them more used to different brands so that you wouldn't depend on a specific brand keeping in business and with the same recipe for life. They do tend to get fussy, though, specially if you buy loads of expensive food in offer
