Re: My cat had a raw lamb steak yesterday and has had diarrhoea today. Is this normal
It probably is because I treated her yesterday to raw meat. She has never had raw meat before. I am hoping it will settle over night but it wasn't very nice having to clean up diarrhoea today from her cat litter tray. She's never had diarrhoea before.

I think she has just had too much of a good thing.
Lamb is a very rich and fatty meat and if she ate the whole steak that could be quite a shock to a system more used to commercial food. When we feed raw it is in a proportion of 80% meat and 10% bone....the bone is more binding in action for the bowel and so diarrhoea is avoided. Changing from one food to another, and especially between one level of quality and another, should always be done slowly and gradually to avoid these problems. If she loved the raw meat then you are very lucky and can look in to feeding her more of it, but it must be done in a balanced way. |

She only had 80g as I trimmed the fat from the lamb steak (Which was a small one) and cut it into small pieces. This is way below the daily recommended amount of meat that being roughly 200g to 400g. It may have been the meat was rich for her stomach. |

I agree that the type of meat may well have been too rich. Incidentally, raw feeders use a guideline of 2-3% of a cat's body weight as feeding guide. So a 5kg cat would be given 100-150g of raw meat per day. Kittens may eat more, but 400g would be an awful lot to be fed in one day.

She's 2 years and 7 months old and weighs 4.1kg so perhaps I did give her a bit to much. Whoops. In future though I think I will stick to the food she is used to. Last edited by tomdorrian; 26-12-2011 at 08:54 PM.. |

Wow, I wouldn't let one possible bad experience, which possibly is due to you over-feeding her, spoil your venture into raw food.
Your guess is as good as mine but it could just be that her over-active bladder and diarrhoea are not at all related to the raw lamb but rather to too many other treats etc etc. |
