Re: rice

Well I suppose pro's are it's bland and gentle on tummy. Fills them up.

Cons: why would a cat eat rice? It's not natural.

Re: rice

In dry food a very cheap filler that is used in too much abundance. In wet food I personally find a small amount acceptable as long as it is well-declared and doesn't just appear as "cereal" without specified amount; often used as a source of fibre.

Just look at the food for which you have posted the ingredients - although the first ingredient is a meat and even a meat meal, which is great; the second and third and even fourth ingredient are grains. The reason why they have included brown and white rice (and I am being cynical here) is that if they had only used one - say brown rice - the food would suddenly contain the same amount of rice as the meat and they would have to declare meat meal (36%), rice (36%), which doesn't sound as good as the ingredient list as it stands. And people are gullible and people don't look too closely. However, also add the oats into the mix, and suddenly you have more grains than meat. A big no no imo.

If you are looking for a dry food - though I presume you are aware of the benefits of an all wet diet - than do your cats a favour and look for a good grain-free food or a dry food that contains just a small proportion of grains.

Cats cannot utilise carbs to that extent; hence why a load of it is just a cheap filler. A high carb content in turn is related to a change in urine ph, which in turn can lead to other things - such as encourage certain bladder stones in some cats. It can also lead to obesity etc.

HTH
