Chronic Diarrhoea/ Colitis?

Hi Everyone, this is my first post and I am asking for advice because I am desperate!!

I have had my 2 cats since last January, they are now a little over a year old. From day 1 we had problems with runny stools. I've spent a fortune at the vets, they've been treated for giardia, had blood samples taken and tried bland food.

My little boy is much better these days (although he goes outside instead of using his tray so hard to tell for sure) but my little girl seems to have deteriorated! She has chronic diarrhoea, sometimes a little slimy, sometimes a little bloody. She also has bad wind. She is well in herself and isn't losing weight but can often leave 'spots' of faeces where she sits after she has used her tray which is not good!

They are both fully vaccinated, wormed and de-flea'd. My boy spends time outside but although she has access, my girl doesn't venture far and is more of a house cat.

Another recent trip to the vets was fruitless but she did suggest that it may be a flare of colitis. Whilst I certainly don't begrudge the vet fees, I don't seem to be getting any new answers and the problem is ongoing!

They have been eating dry food only for several months. We have tried them on Purina EN Gastro bland food, Purina sensitive stomach and for the past month or so on Hill's Sensitive stomach but to no avail!!

I am willing to try any suggestions, some forums seem to suggest that wet food may help more than dry? Anything anyine can suggest would be welcome, I'm running out of ideas and have a baby on the way so could really do with getting this one sorted asap.

Thank you so much!!!!

Re: Chronic Diarrhoea/ Colitis?

If they have checked for everything by the vet maybe it's a food intolerance.

I had the same problem with my 2 until I put them on Natures Instinct raw mince and they have been fine ever since.

Re: Chronic Diarrhoea/ Colitis?

Do you have copies of the test results? If not the first thing I would recommend is a call to the vets to check whether they have they been tested for Tritrichomonas Foetus. This is becoming more and more prevalent in cats and the symptoms your cats are suffering are absolutely typical of this. In addition it isn't something that is always routinely tested for and some vets still know very little about it, on certain tests it can be mistaken for Giardia. A specific PCR test is needed to confirm diagnosis. If it is TTF there is a treatment available that will clear it up effectively, normal antibiotics won't have any effect.

Re: Chronic Diarrhoea/ Colitis?

I've had a cat before who had chronic runs and used to leave those pop spots. Not nice! So I know how you're feeling. Luckily with him it was the rubbish diet he was in when I got him and he was soon on the mend. I can't offer much advice for you but wanted to say I know how you're feeling and hope a solution is found very soon

Re: Chronic Diarrhoea/ Colitis?

I'd find out exactly what they have been tested for. When they were treated for giardia did they have fecal tests done and were they positive?

It could be anything.

Have you tried feeding plain chicken or fish for a few days to see if her poo firms up or changes at all?

Re: Chronic Diarrhoea/ Colitis?

Hi Han,

This is my first post too - I have a cat who is currently having a colitis flare up and I know how horrible it is

Advance apologies to anyone squeamish - is the blood in your cat's faeces bright red or dark red? Bright red is a sign of colitis (ie inflammation of the large intestine) but dark blood can mean there's a problem higher up the digestive tract.

We have tried our cat on what feels like a million different types of food and the only thing that he can eat at the moment without vomiting and diarrhoea is Royal Canin Sensitivity Control.

Could your cat have a food allergy by any chance??
