Re: Wet cat food at tesco
I think you might be confusing meat content and protein content, have a read of the sticky below which explains the whole 4% thing:
Feeding cats for beginners (and more seasoned cat owners alike) There are some okay foods available from the supermarkets and one or two good ones at Pets at Home etc, however you will pay more for them than the likes of Felix and whiskas. Whereas some of the better quality foods available online such as Smilla and Animonda Carny can work out a similar price to the supermarket brands when you take into consideration the feeding recommendations. |

Re: Wet cat food at tesco
I personally buy Butchers classic, think a few others here do too. They are in Tescos and Wilkinsons at around £3 for 6 tins ... think the meat content is around or close to 50% ... dont have a tin handy for exacts sorry. Whereas the meat content in felix whiskers etc is only 4%. I tried Smilia from the net and my cats didnt really like it, but they love the butchers, and my one with the sensitive tum (Alfie) is fine on it too

Don't have the figures for Felix but should be very similar to Whiskas. Whiskas and even one of their representatives who ventured on here once told me/us that their chunks in jelly contains about 48% of meat, the rest is jelly etc. So, imo Butchers is on par with Whiskas and co (and before anyone says but Butchers is better because it doesn't contain any cereals or sugars there are plenty in the Whiskas and Felix range too that don't). Incidentally, the Whiskas supermeat (if that is still available) had a meat content of about 70% (I say meat but for all of these foods it is probably more likely by-products and not the meat when you are thinking of when you hear the word "meat"). Simple fact is that in the UK you cannot get a good, cheap food in supermarkets (Tesco once did one with 60% meat content but not sure whether they still do and that was a pate too). Nature's Menu is perhaps the most easily available but it isn't necessarily cheap. If you want your cat to eat better foods, then you have to order online. Re: Wet cat food at tesco
I was reluctant to order online when I first discovered my cats' diet was a bit cr*p - have to say I've adjusted easily, it's no hardship (it's actually easier than lugging catfood in bulk back from the shops) and (I think!) my cats thank me for it.

Re: Wet cat food at tesco
Hobbs.....I take on board your comment that both Whiskas and Felix produce foods that do not contain cereals or sugars, but I think that most of their foods use vegetable proteins in their foods which raises the carbohydrate levels and is not easily assimilated by cats.
I am sure you will correct me gently if I am wrong. ![]() |

Re: Wet cat food at tesco
Actually we found that Whiskas and Felix always seemed to have a detrimental effect on blood sugar levels, but that Butchers (and even Whiskas supermeat I think ) did not to such a degree. The deduction was that the vegetable protein content was an issue for a cat to metabolise.
Anyway, in answer to OP's post....I am another one who will recommend Bozita, Animonda Carny and Grau bought online over any readily available supermarket food. |

Re: Wet cat food at tesco
Well, there you go but again not all Felix and Whiskas appears to contain the vegetable protein (but if they don't they appear to contain sugar - but I don't know whether they mean sugar (caramel) as in the colourant or not). Your best bet is to feed a food that is clearer in their labelling!
