Snaggle is really poorly

Some of you might remember that I used to have another cat called Snagglepuss, he left home to live with a neighbour 3 years ago when the bullying from our other cat (Elvis) got too bad for him. We didnt want him to leave but hes adored where he is and he loves it there, and I get to see him still so I agreed when my neighbour asked if she could adopt him officially. On friday he got really ill, he was being sick all day and just wanted to sleep or sit with his head down, so his new mum and me took him to the vets. Hes been on a drip all friday and saturday and his bloods taken, hes got very low pottasium and high white blood cell count. Hes home now and on antibiotics and pottasium tablets and he is still very subdued. Have any of you had experience with anything like this before. snaggle is 13 and has a heart murmer and arthritus.

Re: Snaggle is really poorly

I've got no experience like that, but I did want to wish Snaggle well and hope he has a speedy recovery.

Re: Snaggle is really poorly

Sorry to hear about Snagglepuss. What is the vet suggesting so far?

Low potassium can cause cause neck ventroflexion making it difficult for them to lift their heads but it's a symptom of other illnesses. How are his renal values since this would be my first thoughts as levels are often depleted through frequent urination associated with the condition. If these were elavated ( see below ) I would think kidney infection is a strong possibility. However, persistent vomiting or diarrhea can also be a cause as well as diabetes, for instance. He should improve with supplementation, though.

High white cells ( do you know which ones as there are 5 ) usually points to severe infection. Is he on antibiotics?

Hope he's better soon. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the reply, he has very low potassium which hes now on tablets for, theyve ruled out kidney failure but they are presently thinking it could be a deap seated infection somewhere, probably something that hes had for a long time, at least thats the way it was described to me. The vet said the neck position was classic of low pottasium before he had even had a blood test. He had "full bloods" I was assuming that meant they would test for things like diebetes, he hasnt had diarrhea and hes stopped being sick since hes been home. He is better than he was but hes still very depressed, although hes eating now, but apart from that he seems to just want to sleep. Im not sure which white blood cells they were referring to, I didnt even realise there was more than one type .

Im not sure if he has, would that show symtoms like these? Would Fiv/Felv be covered by a full blood test? Its hard to find out the specific details because he isnt my cat anymore, it was so alien for me to let him go to live somewhere else and I feel really helpless now

Re: Snaggle is really poorly

I would think it would be covered, maybe worth asking though. I hope he can be sorted x
