Harley's been to the vets.

Harley is still not very well so this afternoon I took him vets.
He has a viral infection with a temperature.
So he gave him a long acting antibiotic which should last a couple of weeks.
If there is no sign of improvement by Monday I am to bring him in as soon as.

Also vet gave him about 8 sample packets of Royal canin, so hopefully he will be enjoying food again very soon.

So lots of cuddles and rest for Harley x

I've just come back from the vets as our youngest all of a sudden came down with something early evening, didn't want to chance it with him being under a year and wasn't happy to wait until the morning as he had ben sick 3x and stools ended up runny in the end. Turns out there's a lot of gastric virus going around in cats at the moment. Vet gave him injection to help with the sickness and nausea. He's completely off his food, very unlike him, is by the fire now. I've also got some RC food to give him and some sachets to sprinkle on his food, also a tablet for him to take over 4 days.

The elder boy had similar thing 24 hours ago however he wasn't as bad and seems back to normal. In case the girl gets it, have a few extra supplies of the sachets

Vet said they've had a few cats in who have got dehydrated because of the virus. I've never experienced it before in my cats.

As I was reading your post dehydration was a concern. It's far more important to keep a sick cat hydrated than well fed. Lectade or a similar product should be in every owner's first aid kit - if for no other reason than your vet will charge you handsomely for it otherwise It is possible to make your own rehydration fluid with boiled water, salt and glucose but a commercial product like Lectade is also loaded with other vitamins and nutrients.

Just to clarify, our kitten wasn't dehydrated, there was no worry there as we had caught it early.

Sorry to hear your little one is not well. Hope he will soon be back to his normal self.
I am hoping for Harley to eat something tomorrow. So far no luck

Thanks, the injection seemed to help and he ate a little last night. I left him in a room by himself to sleep overnight and this morning, he seems back to his usual self. I'm waiting for him and the older boy to do their number 2 as this seems to be a telling sign if things are okay. Am feeding the RC Gastro Food for the next few days then hopefully back on their usual stuff.

How's your boy now? Can be worrying when they don't seem themselves and off their food to that extent. Is hard to know what is up and no way of telling anything internal until tests are carried out.

Did your vet say to bring him back in if he's not eaten within 24 hours, is he drinking.

Hope it's okay for me to ask in this way. At least you're not alone in this in that there's peeps rooting here for you and your boy, hopefully this viral infection will pass quickly as your boy makes a perky recovery.

I love his bed, did you make it?

Re: Harley's been to the vets.

Aww Jill, I do hope he has eaten something for you by now, otherwise i would be quite worried about issues with fatty liver.
I suppose the ABX were just to rule out any secondary bacterial infection as the vet seemed to think it was viral in origin? They very often include a light steroid to reduce inflammation and boost appetite, do you know if this was given?
I am sure you are offering him lots of tempting foods, how about some full fat probiotic yoghurt? Good protein and also will give him some fluids.
