Changing from kitten food to adult food

Approx. how old should your kitten / cat be when you do the changeover from kitten food to adult food?

How did you go about doing it? I suppose you will have to do it very gradual - like mixing the adult food with the kitten and slowly increasing the amount of adult food.

How did you go about it?

Re: Changing from kitten food to adult food

I don;t feed kitten food - as far as I am concerned it is a gimmick to take more money out of our pockets - if you feed a good quality food then kitten food is unnecessary.

I understand what you are saying. However, I am currently and also have been feeding them kitten food, so I need advice on how to do the changeover. They have Natures Menu kitten food.

Re: Changing from kitten food to adult food

Had a look at the Nature's Menu ingredients on the Kitten and Adult food, and there really isn't much of a difference.
Kitten: Puppy food - Natural puppy foods from Natures Menu Junior dog food range
Adult (Chicken and Turkey): Puppy food - Natural puppy foods from Natures Menu Junior dog food range
(Not sure why the page title says puppy food - I can assure you that the link does go to cat food! )

It may be an idea to mix the new foods together at first if you are not sure how your kitten will take to the adult food, and over the course of a few days (some say a week, to be on the safe side), decrease the amount of Kitten food and increase the Adult food.

My cat was fed on HiLife when he was a kitten, and because the Kitten and Adult foods are exactly the same in ingredients (the only difference was the texture of the food), the change-over only took a few mealtimes. It probably helped that his tummy deals with new foods very well. However, every kitten and cat is different, so probably try the slow and steady way if you are unsure

As for age, well, kittens are usually considered Adult once they reach a year old or thereabouts, but because the Nature's Menu foods are so similar, you could change over to the Adult food right now if you wanted - it certainly won't cause any harm

Re: Changing from kitten food to adult food

If you are feeding a quality wet food then there is no need for kitten food. It is a marketing gimmick to take your money. If you are feeding a low quality food such as a supermarket brand then it does have its place.

My 17 week old kitten has always been on adult food. I am currently changing him over on to a higher quality wet food. Just gradually bit by bit introducing it over the next few weeks. I have successfully introduced one brand and this week I am starting introducing another. Just take it very slowly with just a spoon full or 2 of the new food to start with (Mixed in with usual food) then increase from there. SLOWLY is the key.

Mine has been on Whiskas at the breeders house. I have just got him on to Smilla and am starting Animonda Carny tomorrow.

At what age?

Did you do it gradually or not?

What is the NM adult like - is it chunks?

Re: Changing from kitten food to adult food

What age are yours?
As I've said, my kitten has always been on adult food and is just going through a gradual change over from one adult food to another at 17 weeks with no problems at all.
I suggest you just do it.

Re: Changing from kitten food to adult food

NaturesMenu adult is the same consistency as the kitten food. As they are already on NM you shouldn't need to do it slowly - just plunge on in.
