There are a range of treat dispensing cat toys available, from very basic treat balls to far more complex models - you simply put the dry food in and let the cat work to get it out. Zooplus has some fab ones, but most pet shops sell the usual types.

Alternatively you can scatter feed - sounds odd but it works, the cats find it easily enough and it isn't really a mess issue with dry food anyway. I scatter mine round the living room - on the flor, shelves, in boxes, hidden in and on the cat tree, etc.

I definitely wouldn't be free feeding an overweight cat - work out how much she needs (depending on the food) and give that amount, spread over a few meals.

Might also be worth looking into what type of food she is getting - as I understand it carbs are a major cause of obesity in cats, and most dry foods tend to be very high in carbs, especially from grains. Again, if you want to stick with some dry maybe switch her onto something that is grain free and lower in carbs, like Orijen, Arcana or Applaws.

(Agree about getting her on to at least mostly wet diet tho)
Thanks for the suggestions! I will try the treat ball, but not sure if it'll work! Scattering food sounds like a great idea, but my mum would never allow it, our house is always absolutely spotless unfortunately, mess is Not Allowed. I think she is on go-cats? Do you have any suggestions for wet food that can be bought at a supermarket? I don't want her to be on one just as bad as the dry!

She is so lazy and doesn't really do much apart from sleeping, I don't know if that's normal

Also, feeding wet food may reduce the amount he eats, some cats overeat on dry food.
I'm not in charge of buying the food, but I can try to get her on wet food, just trying to find a good brand that my mum can buy at Asda or something. I'm not sure how much wet food i'd feed though?

Re: Overweight cat?

I believe its ASDA that sells Toplife tetra packs which I think are good.

If you change the dry, you can get Applaws at pets at home, and Encore (same thing) at Sainsburys.

Re: Overweight cat?

My Gwennie is a tad, ummm, substantial. Large boned. Chunky. Lately, we've gotten her to drop a good bit of weight.
We took away all of the dry food as much as possible. We can't do away with it entirely as Henry is hyper-thyroid, and he needs to eat as much as possible all 24/7 (which makes it a challenge to keep a scrawny cat normal while trying to slim down a substantial one). But all they get is grain free dry.
They get grain free wet food.
She gets exercise on the stairs and with the kittens. I'm not saying get kittens and some stairs, but exercise seems pretty key . Anything your cat wants to do to be active, do it. But I do think the food is the real thing. We're going to switch to raw when we can, but again, Henry is the issue here.

Re: Overweight cat?

Would it be possible for you to place the orders online and have them delivered to your parents house, their work place or next door neighbour for them?
I find that buying food from zooplus works out cheaper. I buy Animonda carney and Smilla from there and it's s great price. Free delivery over £19.
Often have great offers on too.
I'd suggest this is by far the best option
