Errant toileting

My Mum has recently adopted by friend's cat Seymour as they are moving to Austrailia and, him being 16, they didnt want to put him through the stress of emigrating.

He has been with mum for about 3 weeks now and seems to be settling in well.

The only problem is that he has been weeing and pooing in the upstairs bedrooms. He doesnt do it anywhere downstairs, only in the spare bedrooms. He has a litter tray which he uses and also goes out into the garden for a tinkle when it's not too cold so it's like he's doing it for a reason ... or a cry for help?

Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to why he might be doing this so we can try and help him out.

Thanks guys x
