fleas and worms

I feel like sick in my stomach that I have caused this problem in our home. We recently lost a cat who we adored, and we then went out too soon and got 2 kittens from a rescue centre. We have had them for a week, the rescue centre said they had been wormed and flead and I co not doubting they didn't but this is the problem I have.. We got them last Sunday and I seen a flea on one of them on Monday, the same cat had scooted across the floor and the other wouldn't stop liking the other ones backside. I took them the vets on Wednesday and said I could give them a worm tablet minebex but I couldn't give the frontline untill the end of this week. Have the worm tablet and one had runny poop the other vomited although it was much later on after the tablet. I then started getting bit to the extent my legs are swollen and so itchy it keeps me up at night I can't sleep. Then we spotted more fleas my husband has picked quite a few out. I put frontline on them yesterday and they went ape scratching themselves really bad then one of them was making a funny noise and I thought it was because one of the toy balls was in my husbands shoe, it was a big worm under it, then the other cat pooped and there was smaller worms in that. I went cak the vet and they have given me disinfectant spray for my kitchen toss and said bring them back next week for the worm tablet. I have sat upstairs as I have sprayed with a spray the vet gave downstairs and I gave just seen a flea in the bedroom. We live in a large house and the cats gave been left in the kitchen for most part only let out at the beginning up on the hall stairs and landing, do you think the flea is on me? I can't spray today as we gave to sleep here tonight do you think it will be alright to leave spraying untill tomorrow? Feel so helpless and angry that I have allowed infested kittens into our home. I know its not there fault and I want to help them they are so cute but am I putting my children in danger I gave a 7 and 12 year old and I mind a 1 year old sorry for the long post but I just need hope that these pests will in away and I am doing all I can

Re: fleas and worms

Please try not to worry too much. The fleas will not stay on you, though they might bite. The spray you have been given should get rid of them quickly. Make sure you spray everywhere thoroughly, especially where the kittens sleep.
Most pet owners will have had to deal with worms or fleas at sometime. Regular treatment against fleas and worms should stop any further problems.

Re: fleas and worms

When we got Caliban as a kitten 8 years back, we had a very similar situation - he was riddled with worms and fleas. The process took a few weeks and a couple of trips to the vet (there was a pure alcohol spray on at one point!), but it did eventually get sorted out. You do need to do a big clean of everything - wash sheets more often than normal and hoover mattresses and particularly keep the cats' sleeping area as clean as possible. This is just until it gets sorted.

And it will get sorted - I know it seems awful now, but the vet has seen this plenty of times and knows what he/she is doing. Keep taking their advice and keeping things clean and before you know it, things will calm down. Then just keep up the regular flea and worm treatments and you should have no more problems.

Good luck.

Re: fleas and worms

You have my sympathy, no one likes the idea of fleas or worms infesting their house. Unfortunately new kittens do so often arrive with these parasites and it is part of our job as new careful owners to eradicate them.
One thing I would say, is that most of the flea population in a house is in the form of eggs or larvae and that it may well be that these have been lying dormant since your last puss passed on....now there are two new cats in the household the fleas are hatching and moving on to the cats to complete their life cycle. Please don't think I am saying 'ooh, you and your house are dirty' that is NOT what I mean, it is just the reality of how fleas work!

Re: fleas and worms

Hi all, I have a similar flea problem at the moment. My 2, 6month old kittens seem to have fleas again despite using frontline every month. We lost our resident cat 'Charlie' recently shortly after getting the kittens. He could have had fleas as he was really difficult to treat. So i guess the eggs are in the home. I sprayed all the carpets last weekend, but we have wood floors downstairs. We have combed out fleas from both kittens, does anyone recommend we use flea powder on them as well as the frontline? or should I keep spraying the house. I used 'permaguard' household flea spray

Re: fleas and worms

mgreen......many people find that Frontline is an ineffective product these days. Try switching to Advantage
Advantage 80 for Large Cats & Rabbits - 4 pipettes : MedicAnimal.com
or Advocate
Advocate for Cats - Large : MedicAnimal.com
which both treat the infestation in the house a well as on the animal.
Indorex, Acclaim or RIP are all good household sprays.

Re: fleas and worms

Thanks for the advice paddypaws, will try these products next time. I presume i have to wait 4 weeks since i applied frontline last week?

have you any idea if the spot-on wormers work? I've seen them on medicanimal but it doesn't sound like they kill all types of worms, would I still need to use an oral wormer?

Re: fleas and worms

Advocate treats both fleas and worms apart from tapeworms, this is a spot on treatment.
