Can cats eat cheese?

I've never given my cat cheese but I'm asking if it would be ok? I heard years ago that it can give cats worms. Is that an old wives tale? Is cheddar cheese too salty even.

Thanks!

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

One of mine loves cheese! He hasn't had any problems and he's 11 now. Given as a treat every now and then should be fine!

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

I'd second that, mine have all loved cheese. Like most things, a little as a treat is not so bad occasionally.
Probably not nitritionally the best, but hey neither is chocolate for us.......

Surely if cheese was cabable of giving a cat worms, then it would need to contain them (they would have to come from somewhere right), and we'd all be suffering

My two have had a cube or two each but that's about it so far, so don't yet know if they really like it or not (they will eat anything once if it even looks remotely like food), however when I was young, my siamese used to love cheese, especially when she was pregnant (she was a registered breeding queen).

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

I had a friend with a Siamese who loved cheese and onion crisps. She would open the cupboard where the crisps were kept, sort through the packets and bring a bag of cheese and onion for opening. She never got the wrong flavour so presumably they can smell them through the bag lol It didn't do her any harm as she lived well into her teens. Such a character

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

Unfortunately, we had to have my girl pts when she was about 8, due to kidney failure, looking back, and with the knowledge I have now, I can't help but wonder if maybe she'd have lived longer if she'd been fed a better diet - as she was mainly fed dry with a bit of wet once a day (this was 25 years ago mind, so we didn't know any different).

mine are obsessed with cheddar cheese mild, they get tiny bits i don't see how cheese would give worms so that must be an old wives tale. They wouldn't be able to digest large amounts as there would be too much diary in it but in small amounts its all good

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

Thanks so much for the replies I'll try them on a little cube of mild cheddar in a sec I was always sceptical of the worms thing and thought that perhap a little bit of cheese would probably be good for them regarding the protein aspect.

Once again thanks!

its funny isn't it the old wives tales lol so many of them
Although in saying that i had a bimbo moment when i thought that cats from same litter could have separate dads was an old wives tale but no lol

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

I just tried some mild cheddar on them. Fluffy loved it, Leo nibbled a bit and Susie wasn't impressed at all lol! I got a book out of the library the other day and apparently some cats are partial to the odd grape! Might try that as the occasional treat too.
