TBH cats are bigger cheese eaters than mice.

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

I give my cats tablet with chees, BUT, I have been advised that due to the salt content coupled with his age and a few other bits I guess that this is not really a good idea!

My Steffie and Precous lived to be 19 on that kind of diet, and my present cats are doing fine on high-quality dry food and a bowl of wet food a day.
It is the quality of the food that matters, and you need to keep an eye on the cat to see if he drinks enough. A cat that will not drink much needs more wet food than a cat that will drink. Two of my cats prefer dry food over wet food, and they both drink a lot more than the rest. They are not diabetic, so it is purely because they eat more dry food, and they compensate for it by drinking more.

But if a cat eats a lot of dry food and doesn't compensate by drinking more, or if the composition of the dry food is not too good, trouble lurks just around the corner....

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

Gawd, my cats eat EVERYTHING, especially Jazz! I don't feed him "human" foods on purpose, but if he sees you eating something he fancies he has to have it.

Cheese is a huge favourite, but then so is curry, croissants, fudge, tomato soup, toast, wotsits, icecream....

My cats are worse scroungers than the dogs - in fact, the poor dogs literally never get leftovers or scraps, the cats get them all first!

Still wouldn't feed em grapes though, no matter how big a tantrum they pull.

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

As for cheese.....
it contains far too much salt. Any food for human consumption contains far too much salt for a cat, and is therefore very unhealthy.

Even fresh or cooked codfish (with NO added salt) is bad for a cat's kidneys, if given more than once a week. My first cat (he moved in when I was 4) refused anything but fish, and he died of renal failure at 8 years old. We tried to feed him other things, but he would rather starve himself and try to join the neighbours' cat for HIS fish dinner.

If you have ever bought Almo nature tinned cat food, just have a taste.
They are perfect shrimps, crab, sardines. Fit for a king..... if there were any salt in it. As it is, it has hardly any taste (to the spoilt human taste, that is). We are so used to having salt as a flavour enhancer, that we no longer taste the natural flavours....

Re: Can cats eat cheese?

Skye loves cheese In fact she loves any food that isn't hers! I think they've had a bit of cheese once but she will get up on the worktop when I'm grating some and try to lick the grater when I've finished! She will try and lick the butter too and the knife I've used with it! The pair of them will swipe anything off your plate given half a chance - Skye more than Spencer though. Spencer goes mad for ham - will try to swipe it out your hand! And he does the same with their minces so they have to get shut in the hall while I put it in their bowls!

Roll on being able to shut them out the kitchen
