cats and raw food.

I want to introduce some raw food into my cats diet,im thinking of trying chicken wings, and raw minced rabbit, just a bit worried about the bones,i know raw bones are not brittle, liked cooked.does anyone feed these, and have you ever had any problems?

Re: cats and raw food.

I have only given mine mince but I am sure the bones are meant to be good for them. I think you have to just watch them at first to make sure they don't have any trouble with them.

If not, can't you buy a supplement that goes with the raw that contains the bone and internal organ bits that they need?

You certainly can Lou hun xx It's the Instinct Powder from The Feline Future Company plus you need to add raw liver. There is a liver powder but it's not yet available to us in European Countries but I believe they are working on it!

If you don't want to feed bone then the only suppliment that I would add to replace the missing bone for calcium is crushed / powdered egg shell mixed in with the mince (half teaspoon delivers 900mg calcium.). If you are feeding processed wet or dry food as well as raw then supplimenting is not nessasary as the wet /dry has all the additional tuarine / calcium that your cat will need.

When feeding all raw if you feed mainly white meats you will need to suppliment with Taurine. However dark meats and hearts have a high Taurine count so Taurine suppliments are not needed.

Cats can handle rabbit, chicken and lamb bones from a very early age. My kittens get day old chicks from 6 weeks and then progress onto rabbit chunks at 8 / 9 weeks. If you cat has been fed processed food for a while then chicken wings can seem a little daunting to them at first. It is best to crush them a little (pop in a sandwich bag and hit with a rolling pin).

my cats love raw chicken wings.. the bones are great for their teeth and exercising their jaw muscle.

I love raw liver!!! In fact the only things I won't eat raw are chicken and pork. My family all think I'm mad.
I'm trying Mai Tai on raw chicken drumsticks (take them or leave them) and she had some raw stewing steak the other night when I was doing a casserole (liked that)
She'll have to fight with me for raw mince!!! As for liver -no contest!!
