Kitten with runny poo

My kitten has developed runny poo.

It used to be perfectly normal but over the last few weeks has turned more runny and very smelly.

She is 4 months old and has been wormed properly since i got her (the last time was about 3 weeks ago) I have not changed her food recently.

Does anyone know why this could be?

She is still playful and seems her normal self, she doesn't seem ill and isn't off her food or going to the toilet any more often than usual it's just runny when she does.

Re: Kitten with runny poo

has she been flea treated? I ask this because Treacle got tapeworms soon after being wormed, as he still had fleas, and this gave him runnier poos, some with blood!

No she hasn't been treated for fleas, but i am pretty sure she doesn't have fleas.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Re: Kitten with runny poo

I would phone the vet first thing tomorrow and ask them to give you some tubes for a stool test. Could well be a bacterial infection. If there are parasites, then a stool test will also throw that up. Considering that this has been going on for a few weeks (which is a few weeks too long with a kitten) and is getting worse it really needs sorting now.

Actually, have you talked to a vet about this in the last few weeks? Have they seen the kitten since the symptoms have developed?

Re: Kitten with runny poo

No she's not seen a vet and i haven't spoken to them about it yet. It has only been a bit runny (not too bad) and some times would be fine. But just before i posted this the poo she did was very runny, worse than it has been previously which has worried me a bit. I think i will see what it's like the next couple of times she goes and i am going to carefully monitor what she eats to see if one brand of her wet food seems to be causing it more than another. This is the only thing i can think of because i do alternate between 3 different wet foods on a daily basis so this could explain why some days it is fine.

Re: Kitten with runny poo

Or it could not be food but an infection that needs to get sorted. Why not do both? Take her to the vet, get a stool sample done asap and monitor what she is eating and whether that has any discernible effect while you are waiting for the results to come.

By your own account in your OP, it has been going on for a few weeks now and is getting worse. So, perhaps now is time to do something about it properly.

Re: Kitten with runny poo

I phoned the vet yesterday morning and he said as it only seems to be some days it's happening to monitor it and make a note of every time she goes to the toilet (including what it's like) and what food she has eaten that day.

I have been doing that, and avoiding the food i think it could be, and all has been fine so at the minute I am going to keep monitoring it closely and see if it stays ok.

The vet did say to call them back and take her in if it got any worse or if it continues after stopping the food that i think it could be causing it.

Like i said she has been ok yesterday and so far today so fingers crossed it was the one brand of food that didn't agree with her tummy. I am monitoring it very closely though so i will spot straight away if she needs to go to the vets after all.
