Re: Orijen Scare

Are they planning on issuing a warning over here just in case?
Hugo was wobbly on his hind legs last night - two days after I opened a new bag of orijen. He's in for a post-op check soon so I'll ask my (Australian) vet what she thinks. I'll certainly be taking it away as soon as I get home.

Re: Orijen Scare

Yes I have read that but I am not prepared to take the risk.

There are members on this forum from many other countries so it is just to make them aware.

I am not telling people what to do, just merely passing on information - what you choose to do with it is down to you.

I agree! Cashing in on a bit of scare mongering that seems to have nothing to do with the actual food, but what was done to it on import.

Feeding dry is unnatural for the cat anyway, its only benefits are human convenience - imho

Re: Orijen Scare

Although other dry foods dont kill your cats after a few weeks of feeding them it...

I have a 15 year old moggy who has had a main dry diet all her life - I think shes been to the vet due to illness maybe twice in her life, she is still going strong - so dry food cant be all that bad.

As for MPM's offer to those of you who would be financially out of pocket by throwing away unopened bags of Orijen - Marketing or not - if it saves you a few £££'s - why not? Its not naughty - its a company running a business whose customers are cat lovers.

I hope MPM doesnt see the negative attitude on this thread and next time they can step in and help cat owners and breeders, they dont bother for fear of being judged.

Re: Orijen Scare

Didn't you read about the terrible problems with certain dried foods last year? Plenty of cats and dogs died, although fortunately not in the UK. The foods were contaminated with melamine from China, which was added illegally in an attempt to boost the protein content - due to a loophole in the method of testing for protein, the tampering wasn't noticed until it was too late

There have also been cat deaths in Australia due to contamination of another dried food (not Orijen) - I personally know a breeder who suffered badly because of this. Then there is the problem of contamination of a well known brand of dried food with aflotoxin - this has happened in Europe and many breeders have suffered.
So the Orijen scare is by no means an isolated case.

Despite this I think that the new Applaws dried food is a huge improvement on what is already available and I shall be using it, but only as a very minor contribution to my cats' diet. Dried food is still dried food, with a very low moisture content and inappropriately high carbohydrate content, (I think Applaws is 15% carb, without going to check on the pack!) making it unsuitable as a sole diet for a carnivore such as the cat

Re: Orijen Scare

Anything for a freebie huh!

There was hushed up case with IAMs a number of years ago too. They put a rubber preservative called Ethoxequin (sp?) in their dry food, cause no end of problems. A large US dog breeder took them to court and it was settled outside on the quiet for an undisclosed sum. Hills used the same preservative in their foods.

Just adds more weight to a fresh diet, because only then do you know exactly what is going into your pets food.

It's a great marketing ploy tbh.

He gets customers to switch, knowing a good % of those customers will come back and buy more of his food, rather than orijen.

Top marks to him, an excellent marketing strategy!

Re: Orijen Scare

This is all very emotive, but reading the facts I would repeat it isn't the food itself that is at fault, it is what was done to it on import that caused the issue

Is Applaws exported to Australia ?
