Kitten Heart Murmur

Hi

I took my boy (9weeks) for his first jag yesterday which also happend to be his first visit to vet - the vet said he has a heart murmur and that this is fairly common - does anyone have any experience of heart murmurs in kittens. Also got him sprayed for fleas and a worming tablet so after all that he should be a fit wee boy hehe!!

x

Re: Kitten Heart Murmur

Not expereinced in this field but I know heart murmurs at 9 weeks can be pretty common & are usually known as growth murmurs.

He needs to be checked again at 12 weeks & if still there then the vet will advise you accordingly. Hope this helps a little & will keep my fingers crossed that it has gone at 12 weeks.

Someone else with more experience will probably advise you if I have missed anything out

Welcome to the forum by the way

Thanks - yeah he'll be going for his 2nd jag at 12 wks and will have him checked out then. i just felt that the vet palmed me off yesterday as if it was normal (even if it is, its not normal to me, i know nothing about heart murmurs).

Re: Kitten Heart Murmur

No don't think the vet is palming you off just that as he is young the most obvious I think would be a growth murmur. If it is still there at 12 weeks the vet will probably advise further tests just to be on the safe side.

A vet can only tell you that they can hear one but not tell you what is causing it which is why if still there at 12 weeks they will probably advise for further tests. Hope that explains it a bit better for you

Re: Kitten Heart Murmur

I once had a kitten with a heart murmur. I was told it was quite bad, can't remember the rating/score. However, by the time he was old enough to be neutered the murmur had disappeared alltogether, so try not to worry too much about it
