Kitten eye discharge

Hi everyone,

new to the forum and am hoping you could help me. Two weeks ago we adopted an 8 week old kitten. She has been to the vet last week and got all her vaccinations plus flea and worm treatment.

However, from the beginning, she's been having a yellow/greenish eye discharge. There seem to be no other symptoms of anything being wrong, but she gets a ball of eye gunk every couple of hours or so.

I asked the vet, but he didn't seem overly concerned, but I am not convinced and was wondering if anyone else has had any experience like this? There is no redness, no swelling, no nasal discharge (a lot of sneezing though), she is happy, playful, eating, using her litter box and general very well with no sign anything is wrong.

I might just be paranoid, but it doesn't seem right for such a little kitten to have that type of and so much discharge.

Thanks,

Teetasse

Hey Teetasse, welcome to the forum.

If I were you I think I would either go back to / phone the vet you have seen to get this explored a little further or I would perhaps see another vet for a second opinion. Eye gunk is all very well but I wouldn't quite expect there to be a new blob every few hours. Good to hear that she is otherwise doing ok!

Re: Kitten eye discharge

If you are still concerned go back to the vet but it could be that your kitten has had something in her eye irritating it, even a small scratch caused by another kitten before she came to you. In the meantime I'd keep it cleaned it with boiled water or even a little cold tea.
Is this both eyes or just one? Both eyes I would be more worried about than just one.

Re: Kitten eye discharge

Hey Guys,

thanks for your quick replies!

It's in both eyes. I will definitely go to another vet, the one who saw her initially wasn't our regular vet (we have another, older cat). Unless she's cleaned it off herself, I've been using a wet cotton wool pad - which she actually really enjoys, she purrs like mad)

I've actually taken pictures or if because whenever I try and show someone the discharge, she's just cleaned it off beforehand!

I would also speak to the vet again.
Yellow/green is often a sign of an infection but I agree that more commonly you would see this in both eyes. Hope she is better soon.

Hi,

thanks for all your advice! I'll be taking her to the vet next week! ( a different vet!)

When we got her, she didn't have this problem, could it be that she is allergic to something? She also sneezes quite often.

Thanks!!

Hi, welcome to the forum.

To be honest, if it was my kitten, just for precaution, I would try and get in contact with an emergency vet helpline just to rule any potential cause she could be potentially displaying symptoms of and to determine whether she needs to be seen and or can wait until Monday, in light she has been sneezing as well as both eyes discharging.

Do you have a practice in mind, perhaps call their line to follow up with out of hours provision.
