Post Road Accident - Need advice.

Good Morning,

I was wondering if any of you have had a cat thats been in a road accident?

My cat "Kobus" have been hit by a car on saturday morning... his currently at the vet hospital and will be home tomorrow (hopefully) his cracked his pelvis and will need to be caged for 4-6 weeks at home.

I would appreciate any advice on keeping him calm, insuring that his 4-6 weeks is comfy, feeding him right... any advice at all..

Thank you...

Ask your vet about feliway diffuser plug ins and other remedies [a lot will depend on how stressful he finds being crated.]
Try putting a blanket over the top of his crate if you can see he's stressed, he might feel very vulnerable, and prefer to be a bit under cover until he feels stronger.
Pain relief is very important, cats are very stoic and don't always show pain outwardly, but it would send stress levels shooting. Make sure the vet explains correct doseage carefully, as it's very important to not over do it.

valerian compound can be sprinkled on his bedding, and is very soothing to cats and just keeping him in a quiet place until he's settled will help a lot.

Re: Road Accident - Need advice.

Hi, my cat got a broken leg (from a dog nearly ripping it off) however we had to keep him confined for 6-8 weeks - for the first 4 weeks we kept him in a cage (big enough for a medium sized dog) and we let him out at night for a stretch and then at intervals for the toilet. It was a terrible time, he got really depressed. His leg was broken in an awkward place near his shoulder bone, so the Vet said it was imperitive that he is not allowed to jump up on anything or walk on the leg. It was sad to keep him in the cage for so long! He put on a lot of weight from getting no exercise, but the Vet said that was fine.

We had painkiller in a liquid form called "Metacalm" and this really helped with the pain and it kept him calm. but the Vet warned do not overuse as its bad for their kidneys, so it was twice a day even though we wanted to give more. Shame! When he got stressed we put him on our laps and he just purred - like he needed reassurance that he was going to be ok!

the last 2 weeks we kept him in the sun room, and took out all furniture so he wouldn't jump up on anything - that is the most important thing! Even after the cast came off, he wasn't allowed outside for a further 3 weeks. In total he was confined for nearly 10 weeks. He's back to normal now, sometimes with a little limp but its improving every day.
