Swelling from mid-line

My Hesper was given a mid-line spay last Friday (I didn't ask for one, was given one as the vet 'didn't want to spoil such a gorgeous coat' ) but over the last couple of days she got a swelling underneath the skin. The wound itself is slightly swollen and has been checked out but the under skin swelling is about the size of my thumb and on a 5 month kitten it's quite pronounced. She's off to the vets tomorrow but just wondered if anyone knew what it could be?
She's fine otherwise, tearing about the house as usual!

Quite a few of our dog spays get saggy swelling underneath, and it's nothing to worry about, usually goes away after a few days. Unless it's very red/purple, or feels like fluid under the skin, I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Thanks, it's quite solid feeling and fixed rather than moving with the stitches so that's re-assuring. I've never had a cat with a mid-line before no don't know what is normal.

Re: Swelling from mid-line

There are a number of reasons. More than likely its some sort of reaction to the stitches causing a fluid build up. One of my girls had that, but it disappeared within a couple of days of the stitches coming out. That kind of reaction is quite common apparently.

The other possibilities are a slight infection, which a course of antibiotics will cure, or the worst case is some sort of hernia. Cats have very poor blood supply and sometimes when the inner walls don't heal together as they should. When the dissolvable stitches they use dissolve then the inner wall parts and you get a hernia. That means a repeat op, but its very rare. That said, I don't think that would appear this quickly if the op was only done on Friday.

Its probably just the fluid build up and the vet will tell you to just keep an eye on it. Side spays are alot easier, but they do mess up the coat. Especially in a siamese, their pale coat grows back the colour of their points and it takes months to disappear. Although, I think he really should have given you the option as midlines cost more than side spays, and that should be your decision not his.

Re: Swelling from mid-line

I had the same when my girl was mid line spayed. I was told it was a normal swelling after the op even tho it was the size of a golfball Have to say it disappeared as quick as it arrived so pretty sure it's normal If you are worried then no harm getting the vet to have a look

Sorry, was a week ago Friday. She's already been in for post-op check last Tues when they said she had some swelling but left stitches in (it's been so long since I had a kitten, do they take them out or do they dissolve?). The wound isn't neat at all but she's only just 5 months which I guess makes it a more difficult op? She's a lilac burmese and I guess she does a lovely coat but I wouldn't ask for mid-line for her vanity only! I'm not sure if they charged me more. Was about £15 more than my boy (who I had to collect early cause he kept escaping!)
A kind of hernia was my thought, it's coming from the muscle wall rather than the skin if that makes sense and is more prominent when she's stretched out.

Re: Swelling from mid-line

It could be a hernia then. I have known a couple go that way, but although it means another op, it is easily sorted, but it is a downside of having a midline done. I would question the vet about that and the cost, although I paid about £15 difference for a side spay to a malteserectomy so maybe he charges the same no matter what kind of spay he does.

Heres hoping its not a hernia anyway. It could still be part of the healing process. One of my siamese had hard lumps underneath where the inner stitches would have been for about 6 mths after, but they did eventually subside.

The outer stitches probably need removal if you can see them. I've only had them use dissolvable stitches on the outer wound once, and there was nothing visible at all, a running stitch joining the edges. Very neat and it healed really really quickly. I have no idea why they don't do that all the time.
